My school gpa overall?

Low Science GPA (2.6), Overall GPA 3.47, MCAT 42. Can I get into Medical School?

  • I'm going to apply soon for medical school and was wondering if I should even bother. I messed up in college the first few quarters and can't retake any classes because the lowest I've gotten were C's in many science classes. I know it's asking for a lot, but is it still possible for me to go into Medical School? If not, is it possible for me to get an MD somehow by going into gradschool or special programs? Please let me know, I want to go into medical school, but I'm scared that what I have done in college will hurt me hard.

  • Answer:

There is not another path to become an MD besides medical school. However, there are other programs designed to help you get to medical school. Specifically, a special Master's program. These are 1 year programs in which you earn a Masters degree (usually in cell biology, neuroscience, anatomy, etc). They are designed specifically for students will good-high MCAT scores and a low GPA. You will take many first year medical school classes...such as endocrinology, gross anatomy, neuroscience, pharmacology, etc. You may also get the chance to shadow a physician, go on rounds with medical students or do research. This is giving you a chance to prove to medical schools that you are capable for a higher quality of school work and that you can compete in medical school despite your low GPA. Forgot to say, many SMPs are linked with a medical school. So doing well in them automatically grants you an interview for their medical school (not admission, but an interview, which is still huge). I really encourage you to look them up. The SMPs I know of are: University of Toledo, Tulane University, Georgetown, Rosalind Franklin, Boston University, University of Cincinnati, etc.

no, you shouldn't bother. society will thank you.

*hi*

It depends entirely on the school as to how they weigh certain fields. But your GPA isn't fenominal either so i wouldn't bother applying to Harvard or Johns Hopkins anyway. Also this might be of use- http://www.mcattestscores.com/usmedicalschoolsmcatscoresGPA.html
