What does a copy editor normally do?

What would I need to major in to become a copy editor?

  • I would like to become a copy editor or perhaps even a publisher. Is there anything more specific than English that I should major in? I have heard that one does not need to major in English to become an editor. Assuming this is true, what would I need to major in?

  • Answer:

According to Wikipedia, the best college majors to become a copy editor are journalism, communications, or English. A good preparation program should include critical thinking, diplomatic, and language (proofreading) skills. The Dow Jones has an internship for copy editors.

Other answers

you should actually major in journalism because copy editing is a journalism job. if you haven't committed to a school yet, consider one with a good journalism program. you could minor in english but if you know what field you want to work in, take that as well. for example, if you want to edit for a financial publication, consider taking a major/minor in finance.
