What to do before becoming a nurse?

I'm thinking of becoming a nurse...what steps do i need to take?

• I am 28 and thinking about a career change. Nursing has interested me for a while and I'm thinking about becoming an RN. Do I NEED to be an LVN first? Is there an accelerated program to become a registered nurse? I've got a degree in broadcasting so i'd assume i'd have a majority of general classes done with. I know I'm shooting a lot of question out right here, but i just need some guidance...and to know that this is possible (all while maintaining a full time job if you like this catch) Anyone with any tips?

  You don't need to become an LVN/LPN first. The accelerated programs for RN are for those who already are LVN/LPNs, or are doing the RN to BSN program. You need to look at your local colleges to see what classes you may need for pre-req's. (generally they include Bio, Chem, A&P 1 and 2-all have to be lab classes). If you have these classes you may not need to take them again, but alot of colleges require them to be less than 5 years old. There are a couple of routes for RN, too. Most community colleges offer a 2 year degree for your RN, but if you want your BSN you will need a 4 year degree. I know that it might be possible to maintain a job while going through the nursing program, but I wouldn't recommend it if at all possible-it's a very intensive program. My understanding is that the 2 yr jr college programs are even more so-lots to learn packed into little time. Good luck to you though- if you really want to be a nurse it's worth it!!! Another thing....you might hear about places offering the LPN/LVN program that's only a year-don't waste your time. They're phasing them out all over and replacing them with RNs, and some of those private places that offer the program don't even have a cirriculum that you can transfer over to an RN program (appolo college, etc), so it's a waste of time and money for you.
