How long should a covering letter for a job application be?

  • i know a CV cannot be more than 2 pages but what about a covering letter?

    I suggest one paragraph. A cover letter to accompany a CV should be very brief but have enough information that the reader understands what you are sending him.

Keep in mind the whole purpose of a resume and a cover letter is to get that initial interview. You want to keep it short and keep them wanting and gasping for more information about you. You do not want to shove your whole life history and why you did what onto the paper because that may bore them. The resume should list your qualifications as briefly as possible... The cover letter should just pique their interest enough to give you that call to come in... Remember, the resume and cover letter should just get you through the door. The interview is where you can tell all the stories and fill in all of the blanks of what you can do and what you are willing to do for the job. Dress to impress at the interviews and be relaxed...knowledgeable about the company and be friendly to EVERYONE...including any receptionists. It's amazing how influential the different people you run into can be during an interview...even the man on the elevator.

A cover letter should only be about 1/2 a page with only 2-3 paragraphs. Do a google search and you're sure to find a few templates.

Only a few paragraphs. The purpose is not to give your life history, but to interest the company in wanting to find out more about you. Be sure to include a few sentences that show you know about them, and how you can contribute to THEIR success, not the other way around. Your resume should also only be a page if possible.

approx 2 to 3 paragraphs is what i usually look for,and don't forget to list any enclosures eg (enc: CV ) and please address it sir or madam as you would not want to offend either sex. good luck.

No longer than a page. Your resume shouldn't be more than one page unless you've got a long job history and lots of qualifications.
