Whats better college or starting a business?
-
Here's the scoop, I have two years left to go get my bachelors, but I also have other options. My college is back East in a freezing town in RI. Currently I am on the west coast in SoCal where its nice and warm all the time. Mt friend who just purchased a 2 house 6 unit total building after working in Boston commuting from RI for 3 years is finally making 65k at his finance job. Right, he keeps advising me to go back to college, and finishing and then moving on to bigger and better things, getting a career and then buying properties and ie business. But I want to just save up money or get a loan and go straight into a business. But here's the thing in the mean time while the business is building from part time to full time, I still have my basic expenses I have to deal with. I am on unemployment right now, but I am also building a business and is just taking a while to get to where it needs to be so it can be self sustaining and I have plenty of accounts. My friends suggestion is to go back East ie RI, and finish my two years there and get my Entrepreneur Business bachelors, and then go out and start a business. But of course I would have to work and save my money to buy a business that's established cause basically they already have all the customers, I would just have to service them, with my business and employees. For current business owners out there is it better to finish college and get a degree in case your business goes under, to hold you through the hard times if like the Govt steals your business through zoning or litigation and you lose your business but you still have your degree, enabling you to still work and start over and not at minimum wage. This happened to a friend of mine, he started a business after a few years of saving his money but lost it cause he had a bad partner and he ended up screwing him over. So his advice to me is go back to college and then work on your business. I just want to know whats the better route. Thanks

Having a college degree will never work as a disadvantage to you. It sounds like the people advising you have already made the right path clear, an investment in your education will never be a liability. Starting a business with a college education to your credit is a strong step in the right direction, and is a testament to your future business contacts that you are focused, driven, and are likely to succeed.

College is ALWAYS first priority because if you get your PHD,ect. You can start an even better business with your knowledge instead of just hopping the train to start a new business.

So you have no experience but are just tired of college? Go back to school!! Most jobs, especially those that pay more than minimum wage, require a degree. ANY degree is better than no degree. Listen, it's tough. You have all of these ideas and motivations, and college is draining. It's boring and frustrating. However, THAT is your key to getting ahead. THAT is your key to getting a start. Don't just dive into a business. Can you make it? Maybe, but there are more chances that you will fail and fail hard. Take it slow - you have your whole life ahead of you. The best route is to slow down and not get out of control. Head back to school and spend time looking at your goals. Talk to business owners and LISTEN.

There is no "correct" answer to your question - everyone's life is unique, and nobody knows what is going to happen. It is a factual statistic that, on the average, college graduates earn hundreds of thousands more in a lifetime than do those who do not graduate. On the other hand, Bill Gates never finished his BA in business at Harvard, dropping out before his senior year to go to work in the personal computer software business. He did get in on "the ground floor" - his starting job was at the company that invented the very first desktop computer, the Altair. Gates was both smart and lucky, and, when it comes to getting rich, smart and lucky matter more than does education. There is no specific education that prepares you to be in business for yourself. There are bachelor's and master's degrees in Business Administration that teach many useful things, but you learn more about a particular business by working there than by going to school someplace. Most independent business people do not get rich, and most work very long hours for not much money, until and unless they sell out for a large sum. The vast majority of business start-ups go broke in the first five years. A good college degree in a subject that leads to a career guarantees you a decent living as a worker in someone else's business. A college degree in a learned profession is the most reliable way to make a good living. The only good reason to go into business for yourself is drive - you want to be the boss, you like hard work and long hours, and you want the chance to get rich. The lack of the credentials to earn a decent paycheck as an employee will give you few other choices anyway. So, the "smart" thing to do is to finish a degree in business and then go into business for yourself, if you must. There is no guarantee either way, no matter how anybody you know or have heard of has done. You are not Bill Gates - you will need to find your own luck.
