How do I write a personal statement for law school?

Is this a good way to start my personal statement for law school applications?

  • Word of warning: I am by no means endorsing this way to begin my application or am I intending to use this as my first statement. I am just curious as to what you guys think about it. Thanks. I can't be sure exactly, but your thought process at the moment may be remotely similar to, "Please don't bore me to death with yet another general personal statement." For the sake of my fellow applicants, I hope that is not the case.

  • Answer:

It is an interesting and novel idea, but it is irrelevant to why you should be admitted and is not very professional. It would still not be professional even if you improved the diction. May I suggest that in your statement you never write in the second person, even for one clause of a sentence. Do not use contractions. Do not guess what the reader might be thinking or feeling. The ideal statement should read as if a lawyer were writing a brief for a judge, except that it does not have to be quite so formal and should not include any case or statutory references or citations. The diction should be as formal as would be used in a senior year undergraduate paper which will be read by a professor who does not know you well, except that you may write in the first person.

Bad way to start your personal statement. This idea has been done before, and done to death. While you may have never seen a PS like this, I guarantee you that the people reading it have. It worked the first time someone tried it; it won't work again.
