Why does Brown University send me letters when I know I can't get in?
-
It's torture... I know colleges automatically send you stuff when you take the PSAT, but I got a low score! Even after I took the SAT a few months ago (I got an incredibly low score-- a 1480!), they still sent me emails and a huge pamphlet. My friend got a higher score than I did and yet she did not receive any letters from the Ivy Leagues. Should I at least try? They're probably just going to laugh at my application. Oh well.

Answer:
You're on a mailing list. And as long as you are on the mailing list, you will be receiving mail from various colleges. When my older daughter was applying for college, our mailbox was stuffed with letters and brochures from schools she would never consider. And they kept coming. Some even sent applications, we got letters from one school signed by alumni who were set on trying to get my daughter to apply and so on. Her sister is a sophomore and I expect the deluge to start soon (she just got her PSAT results back and they were not good, but she doesn't care because it is the SAT that counts). Go ahead and apply to Brown if you want to spend the money on the application fee. My daughter has a friend who wanted to apply to Harvard just so she could frame the rejection letter.

1480 out of 2400 I presume. Yes, that's very low for Brown. Maybe they're simply trying to keep demand up, so they can improve their "yield." The more people whom apply, the higher a percentage they can reject, making them look even more selective.

1480 low? Come on. PSATs aren't worth anything, SATs and essays are important too. Are as extra circulars, good recommendations; it's not 100% on SATs (which your score is considered above average and good) What do you have to loose if you apply? Just do it.

I agree with the first answer, I mean the worst thing that could happen is that they will reject you, and its not the end of the world if they do.

No, they just mess with your head. I hate Brown I didn't get in now I'm stuck at UGA

Don't be afraid to try. You didn't say anything about your grades, or if you're a minority or not. These are just two of the many things that make a difference when colleges try to get new students. If they reject you, you haven't lost anything except the price of mailing out one more application. If they accept you, you've gained a lot.

No! I am sorry about your result. I think some disconnected standard operating procedure. To be accepted, is when they accept your application. Meaning after dilligently reviewing your GPA, essay, SAT,etc. You need to be very realistic on your hopes. Do remember that you need to pay for your application fee too. They have nothing to lose. Whereas you have time, money ,effort, hopes expended. Good Luck tho!

Think of it from their side. If they spent a couple dollars on postage and get somebody to come there, they're ahead tens of thousands of dollars. Why wouldn't you send letters to anybody possible?
