What are some jobs where you can choose your own hours?

Which engineering branch to choose?? Chemical or Aerospace...?

  • Let me introduce you to my problem: Chemical engineering- I love chemistry, got potential to crack any problem of chemistry of my level, cracked Level 1 of Chemistry Olympiad... was 1 among 300 who cracked NSEC from 32000 students.... Scored 130/160 in IIT- JEE 2011 in chemistry..... Aerospace engineering- Right since from 4th standard I dream of becoming a astronaut, My interest in this branch increased when I started to spend couple of hours everyday looking into the sky, observing positions of stars, observing satellites and few shooting stars too..... Now problem starts from here, I scored 280/480 in IIT-JEE 2011, will get around 1500-2000 rank .... I can get admission in aerospace at IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras...... But I live in north India .... probably my parents wont allow me to take admission at a place about 2000 Km from my hometown... But I can get Chemical easily at any IITs except IIT Bombay. But my parents wont allow me to choose Chemical as they think Chemical is a bad choice and You wont get any good job in companies like my sister. So what according to you would be a good choice???? According to my heart its 50-50% for both aerospace and chemical... as Im interested in both the branches... Thanx in advance for advice.. My only fear of joining aerospace is that top few students got jobs at NASA and ISRO, left all struggle throughout their lives, further 2000 Km from hometown means only a visit to my parents once in a year...... Correct me if I'm wrong. I hate physics/ I fear from physics ( except modern physics nd aerospace) ...... Thats why only these 2 branches are in my attention

There are some aviation jobs in India but almost no space oriented jobs. NASA is downsizing and letting people go. As well there far more qualified American people for NASA to hire and you need to be a US citizen anyway to work for NASA. On the other hand, there are far more chemical engineering jobs. Way more demand as chemistry is everywhere. Chemical and Petroleum engineers are the top engineering foelds for demand. The following are US figures but they apply in most other countries as well. Except aerospace because the USA builds more aircraft than everyone else put together. Here is a listing of the average starting & mid-career salaries for most 4 year majors. Note that these stats only apply to people who actually got a job in their field. Many graduates in the lower half of the list never get a job in their field & are not counted. The higher they pay, the harder the major & generally the more math they require. I THINK AEROSPACE IS A VERY GOOD CHOICE .... just do a lot of research regarding placements etc and take the final decision

Look you must go with your choice.... far and near doesn't matter and moreover Aerospace has more scope! So go for it! All the best for future! :)

Basically its your choice .. but as i think you should go for aerospace it has more opportunities.. Go to IIT kanpur it's in north India and One of the best in India. Their are many more engg. exams.... you can try them out.. But i think you already know about them.. well i wish you good luck for your future ahead..

There are much more jobs in chemical engineering. Chemical engineers are valuable, well paid, and overall a very good job to have. However, I think that aerospace engineering is possibly the coolest thing in existence today. Remember that you don't have to work for a space agency, you could also work with aircraft.
