Do I have to get a Masters Degree before a PhD?

Will getting a masters degree reduce the time needed to get a phd?

  • I am gonna be a senior in college this fall. I am a math major with a minor in computer science. I intend to pursue graduate studies in either math or computer science. Since I am only a computer science major im assuming i will have to take more courses part time in order to even qualify as an applicant for phd in comp. sci. I thought getting a masters degree in computer science would be a good idea as it would strengthen my background in computer science and make me a better applicant for phd.My question is....say I get a masters degree in either Math or Computer Science will that reduce the time it takes one to complete their phd in the respective field?? (Im assuming since masters degree already includes many graduate courses it would replace SOME phd courses)

  • Answer:

I imagine it would save time.
