What is the difference between Early Decision, Early Admission, and Early Action?
-
These terms are thrown around so often and defined so rarely that as a prospective college freshman, I have no idea what counselors and college applications are referring to!

Answer:
"Early admission" often gets used interchangeably with "early decision" (the binding kind), however it also has a totally different meaning, so it would be nice if colleges could get their act together and stop confusing people. A few colleges offer true, early admission to students who apply during their JUNIOR year of high school and start college the following year even though they haven't graduated from high school. It's sort of like "dual enrollment," but in reverse. Instead of taking college classes while in high school, the early admission student finishes high school while in college. However, 90% of the time, when high school counselors or college admission people speak of "early admission," they mean the elitist process of applying for binding, early decisions. It's elitist because only wealthy families who don't have to worry about comparing financial aid packages are able to commit to such binding decisions.

These three terms sometimes have different meanings with different school, so be careful. Generally, early decision is when you are positive that you want to go to a certain college (your top choice school). You fill out an early decision application and turn it in before the normal application deadline. In turn, the school lets you know if you were accepted before everyone else that used the standard application. The catch with early decision is that it is binding. In other words, if your early decision application is accepted, you must withdraw all applications you sent to other schools and go to the school that accepted the application. Early action is same thing as early decision, except you don't have to go there if they accept you. The college will let you know sooner if you are accepted and you may choose to go there or not go there. Some colleges give preference to people that apply early for financial aid or scholarships and it helps you stand out because you appear very dedicated to the school. Early admission is not a term I am familiar with.
