I want to become a medical researcher, what kind of degree do i need?

    There are so many fields in medical research: pharmacology, immunology, oncology, etc. And there are tons of different ways to get into medical research. And lots of place you can conduct medical research. So my biggest piece of advice is to think of specifics (where do you want to research, do you want to actually treat people, etc). I suggest you major in biochemistry. It'll cover a lot of different topics relevant to medical research. You can probably take upperclassmen electives about the specific field that you would want to go into. BME is a really tough field and something you should only go into if you like engineering. As for degrees, an MD (medical doctor) or PhD would suffice. Medical doctors can actually end up doing mostly clinical research at a hospital, rather than treating patients. A PhD would also let you conduct research.

Biomedical engineering. An MD and a PhD in biomedical engineering are the two major degrees for medical research. Many people wind up with both if they're actually focused on research. Of course, this means 4 years for a BS, 4+ for a PhD, plus med school. Either an MD or a PhD in biomedical engineering will allow you to do medical research. The pay is great but that's not what you do it for. If you choose only an MD, pick whatever. If you choose BME, major in that or another engineering field and do your graduate work in BME.

The M.D. degree is still the gold standard. It will take four years after you receive your bachelor's degree. The pay is well over $100,000 a year in a good job after you have completed your residency after medical school. You may take any academic major and minor in undergraduate school so long as you take the pre-med classes which are listed on medical school websites.

You'll need a PhD to do research. That's 8-12 years of college - 4 for the bachelors (major in bio, chem, or a combination), 2-3 for a masters, and another 2-5 for a PhD after that.
