What is a good major for me?

What is a good college/university to apply to if I don't know what I want to major in?

  • I'm currently a senior and I'm applying to college right now but I'm not sure where I should apply to. I asked a lot of my friends, teachers, and counselors about where I should apply too, but all they said was what do you want to major in. Well, the problem is I don't really know what I want to major in. So I was wondering if there are any good private colleges/universities that I can go to if I don't know what I want to major in. Thank you.

Hi xc0214, Your posting reads as though you have been given some bad advice and with application deadline quickly approaching you need to make some decision fast. Very few students know what they want to major in when they enter school and even those who know what their major is going to be will sometimes change their major. For you most likely your first year will be taking a variety of courses in order to help you get some ideas ideas and most schools require that by the end of year sophomore year that you do declare a major. This leaves you with a the question where to apply. If you have not yet done so take time to visit a few campuses to get an idea what they are like. Also go online to review schools and find a few that meet you needs. From there make your application and as I said earlier use your first year to explore your options. My advice on schools would be avoid small private schools or satellite state universities as they, generally speaking, do not have many majors. Instead I would recommend targeting large state schools due to their large diversity in majors. If you have a high GPA (3.5 / 4.0 unweighted) with a high SAT ( minimum 1700 English & Math combined) or high ACT minimum 30 - 32 composite score then also consider large private universities (e.g. Northwestern, Georgetown).

I would suggest a state school. They tend to be the most diverse in terms of majors, not to mention they are significantly cheaper. Also, you probably have some idea what you want to major in, so try to find a college that is good in that general idea. You may also want to consider colleges that let you design your own major.

Heres what I did. Most universities, like the one I picked (The University of Idaho), have a plethora of majors to chose from, so go in undecided, and decide after freshman or sophomore year. GO VANDALS!

Any. Most people don't know.

I'd go to a big University with a wide range of majors: i.e. Penn State, Pitt, Temple, University of Maryland, Rutgers, Ohio State, etc... I'd start out "undecided," or even majoring in Liberal Arts. (Yes, most big colleges offer a B.A in Liberal Arts, or General Studies) Even if you don't figure out what you want to do by your sophmore or junior year, you can continue on to earn you B.A., and do an internship or two to get a better idea. http://bulletins.psu.edu/bulletins/bluebook/college_campus_details.cfm?id=30&program=las.htm (here is such a major)

The best private universities that I know of are USC, Loyola Marymount and Stanford.. You can be an UNDECIDED major. However, you will want to have an idea of what you want to major, because the university you pick may not have a particular program or undergraduate degree that you discover you want later on. You may have to settle for something you really didn't want or go through the hassle of transfering to another university.. Also, if your going to recieve financial aid, you must declare a major.. So use your senior year to volunteer and figure out what careers you may like and dislike.. That's the only way you will find out whats out there.. Sorry, you didn't specify what location.. My answer is assuming your in California or interested in private schools in Cal.. Good luck!

Seriously, if you do not know what you want to do, go to a community college and take some liberal arts to find out what you like and get a part time job. Do not waste your money on a big school or going away unless you know what you want. It is going to take you an extra year if you do not know what you want to do. Talk to your guidance counselor and take a aptitude survey or interest survey. Good luck.

If you do not know what major you want to be in, then you should enroll in one of your state's universities that offer a very broad range of majors so that you can see what you like as far as major is concerned.

I suggest visiting/ touring a few schools, see if you get a good fit or feel for a certain place. . apply as a undecided major as an incoming freshman. then take 101 intro to.. everything. you do not have to declare a major until you reach 60 credits JR year. i switched majors 5 x's. in this economic state i would suggest health care,. nursing x ray tech, health care adm. you will always have a job if you are an RN. i would not advise a major in SW, poor pay no openings. the dept of labor has good stats for # of needed professions, also the reference material 'the occupational outlook or for cast or similar title.. forcasts the # of openings.. ' a basic job search may be helpful. where are the job openings. in what field? what types of positions

You should of gone on some college visits before now. You need to know if you prefer a smaller college or a large one. One close to home or in another state. Most colleges have a lot of majors offered, even small private colleges.
