Full time student and full time worker! Can i do it?
-
Hopefully, if everything is alright, I will start college from Sept 2007. I'll be taking full time courses and at the same time doing full time work (40 hours/week as a shift manager). I am wondering whether I can handle this. Studies is my 1st preference. Should I cut down my work hours or I can do it? What do you think if you were in my situation? I am a business student and going to go to a cuny college.

Well, I say you can do anything that you decide you must do. I have worked my way through college completely and i am older now (30). I managed 15 credit hours, a 60hr week job, and filled out my graduate school applications all last semester, and maintained a 4.0 average. I'm not abnormal, anyone can do what they set their mind to. However, you are also talking about your first semester in college so I would offer this advice... You probably can do it, but do you want to? I went back to school as an older student and do not know your situation, had I been 19 I would rather have been a little broke and had more of a "college experience". It's that term that parents and guidance counsellors throw around that no one really gets at 17 when they are being told, but becomes important later. Whatever you choose, best of luck to you, if all you have is school and work and don't mind a relatively non-existent social life then go for it.

If you can afford it, definitely work less. Or check if your employer is flexible and will let you work less now and more when you have semester breaks and holidays.

you could try it for like the first week and see how it works out... But I don't know, college requires a lot of time...

Yes you can. Just put your heart and mind in to it.

It is very difficult to work full time and be a full time student. I have done this before. When you are taking lower-level classes, it isn't so bad. I would definitely work less when you get to your upper-level courses though. I would see how he first week or two go and decide if you think that you can handle working work many hours. Doing both school and work will require a lot of time management as well as giving up a lot of 'fun' things... like having time to hang out with friends.

Well, for me first is college, but you need the money as well. I recommend that work part-time, so you will have time to do your homework and to stay on task. Good Luck!

Good question. My sister worked full time and went to school full time to get her Master's degree, and she didn't have any problems. She busted her butt thought. It is hard. She had no personal life. She was up late everynight, but it is possible. I work full time (military) and go to school part time, and it is HARD. I struggle with it. You can do it if you are dedicated. My advice to you is try it out for a semester, and if it doesn't work out, then just cut back on your work or school hours. Hope this helps. Good luck!
So I have to ask..
Nobody can say whether *you* can do it, because we don't know much about you. But what I can say for sure is that everyone I know who has tried to do this ends up taking shortcuts in their schoolwork. Why? Schoolwork is usually more flexible than a job (e.g., "I can start working on that big paper next week" or "It won't kill me to get a C in this class."). Also, a full time job might make it harder for you to get the classes you want (right professors, right time of day, etc.)--very frustrating situation for some students.
