What are a few college majors/careers suitable to shy people?

Why do a lot of people think college is so hard?

  • I’m just wondering. I was a person who struggled through high school. My grades were only so so and I didn’t really learn much. In fact, I used to get made fun of because sometimes I would get a poor grade on a test that everyone else thought was easy. But when I got to college, things changed. Yes, the work was challenging and tests/papers were not easy, but I learned sooooo much. Professors are more knowledgeable than high school teachers and since your classmates are more mature, it was easier to focus in class. Not to mention that you don't have to deal with punishments/detention. Therefore, I did well in college and graduated Magna *** Laude. College really made a difference in my life as opposed to high school. What’s funny is that I was never really a smart student, especially when I was in high school. Yet, there are many people I know that do excellent in high school, but then struggled and dropped out of college. They felt college was just too difficult. So I don’t get it. Why do many people find college so difficult? Like I said, my grades were only so so in high school. So, I know that if I can get through college, anyone can. P.S.- I hope I didn’t offend anyone here. I don’t mean to put down those that didn’t do to college or those who dropped out. I was just trying to figure out why people felt college was so impossible, but found high school so easy. I felt the opposite.

  • Answer:

One possibility is that your high school prepared you better for college than the high schools your classmates attended. Even a good student at a mediocre high school may struggle with the more rigorous demands of a college curriculum because they're not prepared for the courseload or they never learned how to write a proper essay. Also, many bright students are able to coast through high school. There's so much repetition that they can only half pay attention, but still learn enough to get by on tests without studying much. But you can't do that in college -- the material is covered once and then the professor moves on. If your notes aren't good and you haven't read the course material, you aren't going to remember what you need to know for exams. So the edge in college really goes to students who've learned how to discipline themselves to take good notes, read the coursework and study for exams.

College requires more personal responsibility. It is often the first time young adults are truly living on their own, without parent(s)/family to watch over them and to keep them on track. Many new college students don't yet know how to manage their time. Time management in relation to work, studies, and fun is likely the most significant issue in why people succeed or fail in college.

Some people can't balance college and social life. Aka, get drunk every night, party, play video games, etc.
