How can I teach in University with just a Masters?

Will getting an online masters degree in this field hurt my chances of getting a job?

  • Right now I am in the process of getting my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education at Kennesaw State University and I graduate next spring. I want to get my Masters in Psychology with an emphasis in Childhood and Adolescent development, but my university does not over graduate degrees in this course, nor does any college nearby. Once I (hopefully) start teaching in a classroom next fall, it would be really hard to go to classes at night, plan my lessons for the next day, and get an adequate amount of sleep while going to teach the next morning, so I thought it may be a good idea to get an online Masters degree, and Capella is one of the few offering what I'm looking for. Is this a good place to get a Masters, and would having an online Masters hinder my chance of getting a job?

  • Answer:

Online degrees are honestly made for people like you. This is a great option for people looking to get a degree without having the time or schedule to make it to a brick and mortar location. I would just do some more research on which schools are right for you...make sure they're accredited and have a great reputation. There are a lot of different directory sites you can use to find the perfect school. Congratulations on choosing and graduating from Kennesaw State. It's identified as one of seventeen "hidden gem" colleges in the USA by the ACTA Education Foundation. Don't spoil it by going for a third-rate Master's in Psychology from a notorious bottom-feeder school like Capella.

an online degree is fine but I would do it through a traditional university. A lot of schools offer a masters in education online. Most schools will require you to do weekly lesson plans so you can't really plan one night in advance. Masters work will require a lot of time. I know several teachers who can juggle both. However, for an elementary position it is better to not have a masters before you look for a job.
