What steps do I need to take in order to become a doctor?
-
I want to become either a pediatrician or an OB/GYN. Right now I am a junior in high school. My cumulative GPA is kind of low because I didnt take school seriously. Right now it is at 2.78 or something like that. First quarter just ended and I'm expecting about a 3.5 so that should bring it up. I plan to graduate with a GPA over 3.0. I know that I want to go to college but where do I go after I graduate with a bachelors degree? How long will it take? About how much will it cost for all the schooling, books, etc.? What classes should I take? What should I major in?

Answer:
Your grades in JR. High won't have an impact. Your grades in HS will dictate whether or not you get in to a good college, which will be crucial. You will want to focus on pre-med classes while doing your undergrad, and graduate with a degree in something relative. Next, you will need to complete 4 years of medical school, followed by at least 2 years of residency in a hospital setting. This is the phase where you work for at least 48 hours on with little sleep. This usually seperates the winners from the losers :) Next, depending on your chosen field, you will need a fellowship in whatever discipline you're going in to. Some programs require more intensive training than others. For instance, if you want to go into plastics, your fellowship would be longer than if you chose to go into something less demanding. You will need a total of roughly 10-12 years of school/training.

Your high school gpa will not matter at all in getting into med school. You just need to work hard at getting good grades in college and when it comes time (about 3 years in) getting a high score on the MCAT. Each med school accepts different scores and gpa's, so you would have to look into the school you want to go to. And it's really all about personal preference as to where to go for your undergrad and graduate studies. It takes about 4 years of med school. No one can really tell you NOW what it will cost, because prices change every year, and you have about 4 or 5 years of price jumps before you will be in. Right now though, at a state school in my state it costs $25,000/yr for in-state residents and $42,000/yr for out-of-state residents. Books are VERY expensive (my anatomy and physiology books together cost over $500 and that's only 2 books & lab manuals). You should definitely take a lot of biology classes, child development, family processes, sociology, psychology, you will most likely need at least a year of chemisty and physics as well. You can generally major in any science field (Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences), but you should look at some schools you are interested and make sure you get the right classes for those schools.

Some quick advice - start researching colleges now. Find out the admissions requirements for the most practical (balance of best rated AND the most affordable) colleges you can apply to, and do your best to meet or exceed them. [Real world advice - remember, once you stop going to school, you're going to have to pay back the money you borrowed to go there - and it can get VERY expensive!] In college, you can major in anything you want to - medical schools are looking for more than just Biology majors - but you need to take General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and General Physics (and most schools like you to have calculus). Look into MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) courses or books, and try to take the MCAT in your junior year of college if possible. You will probably want to start applying to medical school in the summer between your junior and senior years of college. Medical School applications are online - there is essentially one general application that is sent to every school that you request, and then if those schools are interested, they will send you their own application(s). Medical school is generally 4 years (some combined degree programs are longer or shorter), and then there is residency afterwards (I'm fairly sure that Ob/Gyn is 4 years, and Pediatrics is 3 years). As a general rule, state schools are cheaper than private schools, but expect to pay at least $30K a year for tuitition, books, and living expenses (that's putting it very conservatively - MUCH cheaper to live at home if it's possible). Remember, federal financial aid is available! Best advice - find a local doctor (it could be your own pediatrician) as a mentor. They can let you shadow them to see what their job is really like, and to get a feel for it. Also, they can give you guidance along the way, and may even be able to write you letters of reference in the future (always helpful). Good luck!

After your bachelors you go to medical school which is 4 years I believe, and become an intern I think around your second year or something. Than about two or three years of being a resident physician (You work under other doctors still). Then you should be done. But when you specialize in something it takes longer, because I think you have to go longer for training in that, possibly a couple of years depending on what you wanna become. The average doctor has about 12 years of schooling total.

Can you sacrifice the next 12 years of your life TOTALLY to constant work and exhaustion? In college, four years (biology major works well) you must constantly study, work extremely hard, and get very, very close to a 4.0. This means no "party" school. In med school, if you thought college 4.0 was tough, you have another thing coming. OMG. After med school, minimum 3 years as a resident, working supposedly only 80 hours per week, but in reality it is more than 80 hours per week. And no, that show Grey's Anatomy is totally BS. If you are ready to study very hard, and sacrifice your time and your youth, you CAN acheive it. But yes, you have got to want it. What is the difference between garbage and a female medical student? Answer: At least the garbage gets taken out once a week!!! What is the difference between a pile of s h it and a medical student? Answer: Nobody INTENTIONALLY steps on a pile of s h it!!! College 4 years...50-100,000 Med school 4 years...100,000 residency minimum 3 years...get paid about 30,000 per year for around 100 hours per week of work (less than minimum wage) fellowship 2-4 years for specialty training get paid about 60,000 per year So from 11-15 years of higher education, with a lot of debt. I dragged furniture out of garbage, and stole food and sold my blood during this time. After that (and I specialized) I started out at around 125,000 dollars per year. Peds maxes out at around 150,000 per year. OB?GYNs pay up to 60-80 thousand dollars ANNUALLY for MALPRACTCE insurance.

You should concentrate hard on the sciences now and in college. If you keep bumping up the GPA, that is noticed by admissions offices. You'll be on the uptick. If you score well on your SAT or ACT, and if you take your college scholarship applications very seriously, you might snag a good one. In your junior year of college, you can write the MCAT which is reviewed by med school admissions offices. If accepted, you are looking at three or four years of med school after earning your 4-year degree in college. It's a challenge. Good luck.
