How do I get into Harvard Medical School?

  • Will I have problems getting in because I've messed up in the past? What exactly do I have to do? This is my situation. I was a C student through out High School because of my absences. I was severely depressed during that time in my life. I felt like i had nothing to live for and going to school was like whatever. I knew that i wanted to be a doctor but at that time i just thought i was only saying that because that's what you say when you don't live for anything. My first year in college I went away to a great SUNY school upstate NY. I messed up my first semester and got academically dismissed with a .42 gpa average. I went to a community college in NYC and took 3 classes. My first semester my GPA went up to a 2.5. I went for 2 more semesters and I ended up withdrawing and failing a few classes. I wasn't mentally prepared to attend school. I was only going because I didn't want to disappoint my mother or have her say that I wasn't in school. and that happened. I dropped out of school for a semester and took CNA courses. I graduated out of the program and now have a CNA license. Right afterward I realized that helping people is what I truly want to do and what i've always wanted to do. Since then I went back to a new community college and i wam starting over with a NEW GPA. I'm doing very well this semester and I would like to transfer into NYU when I'm done with the nursing program I am in now. I would like to get my bachelors in nursing and later on in life go to medical school. I just want to know if i'll have any problems getting in because I've messed up in the past. I am 21 years old now and I am more mature and ready to live my life. I dream big. It is a very competetive school but I won't stop until I get it. I'll work my hardest. =)

  • Answer:

As long as your current GPA is elite (probably around 3.7 - 4.0), plus your scores on the MCAT, extra-curricular activities, and Essay are good, I definitely think you can get in to Harvard Medical School. I believe you can formulate a great Essay, explaining how you have really turned it around in your life, and are motivated to succeed.
