How do you become a College Professor?
-
Ever since entering college, I have always wanted to become a dentist or a physician. I'm starting to change my mind and feel that teaching is something I would really love to do. I'm a Biology major and what really interests me are subjects like Human Anatomy and Molecular Biology. Also I would love to do research on the side and be able to assist students. What is the process to do become a professor? Also would I be able to find a job? and what type of salary can i expect? Thanks.

Ask a couple of your science professors if they will do an informational interview. What you wrote in your question is a great introduction for yourself and the purpose of the interview. The salary research can be done online, as some people are not going to divulge their salaries. Avoid questions that ask for "yes or no" answers so that you won't have to drag information out of them. Job availability can also be researched by doing a job search. People with Masters degrees often teach at the community college level, too. An informational interview with the HR department of you school could give you an idea of how often schools hire PhD's. Your professorship will require a PhD, so you'll have to research your master's and Phd programs to get a sense of how much more schooling you will have to invest in. As you know, grad students often serve as instructors while they work on their degrees. Talk to grad students who are teaching or acting as tutors for your classes. This might help you see if you like teaching. Right now, you might want to see if there are research assistant jobs available to get a feel for that kind of work. Professors have to get published a certain number of times as part of their jobs. You should ask them about that part of the job during the interview. Good luck!

You're going to need a Ph D degree to do this right. That means you need to find your way to graduate school after you finish your bachelor's degree, take your qualifying exams, write a dissertation, and defend it. Finding work is tough, especially if you buy into the elitist story about first-class and second-class institutions. Absolutely talk this over with your advisor or a professor you trust.

If you want a high salary and your grades are great, consider becoming a physician scientist/medical scientist by earning an MD-PhD; it will take about 7 years after you finish college. You could work in an Anatomy or Biochemistry or Genetics department at a medical school and teach medical and graduate students, do clinical or basic research as well as see patients. At some medical schools, much of your education will be paid for if you are in their M.D./Ph.D. program. See the medical school web sites for details.

Ollie and Janet are the most correct- ownpool is not wrong- you dont need to go to Harvard. You do need a phd- and usually in your phd studies you prove yourself as a good teaching candidate by getting good student reviews and also a good recommendation from a current professor. You can look at getting around 90,000 or so a year is the mean as an associate professor.

The best way to become a professor is to earn straight A grades in undergraduate school and a Ph.D. from Harvard. If you are lucky enough to find a job, your salary will start in the mid-five figures and climb to the low-six figures if you are lucky enough to achieve tenure.

While listening to a professor’s lecture she stated in order for her to become a professor she had to write a book and have it published. Writing a book was proof she knew her subject. If you love to teach and share your knowledge than a professor you should be.
