My college grades are DISRACEFUL. I need GOOD advice please?
-
I was doing so well in my old college before I transferred to this ivy league school that I'm in now. In my old school I had really good grades, As and Bs with a high GPA. Even since I transferred to my new school my grades have been dropping badly. My first semester I got a 2.1 GPA, and I thought over time I would adjust and my grades would go up but they have gotten worse and worse. My third semester of being in this school I have a 1.3 GPA and a cumulative GPA of like 1.5 I think. I feel so depressed. I am not the kind of student that does not my schoolwork. I do all my schoolwork and I am not a slacker. No matter how hard I study I still can't write papers worthy enough to get an A even after I sit down to talk to the professors about it. The workload of my school is a lot and I am struggling with it. Also I feel so stupid compared to my fellow students. In class during discussions they talk so eloquently and articulately and I don't talk as smart as they do. I'm so sad because I feel that I won't graduate with good grades. I don't think I'll be able to get into any of those high class grad schools that I want to go to. With my grades I might not even go to grad school. I just feel that I will never be able to accomplish any of my career dreams now with my grades. I study with groups sometimes, I go to professors before exams but the workload of my school is so much that I just can't absorb all of it, I just can't. I feel so bad because my parents are paying all this money and I'm failing. I keep changing my major because every major I pick I keep failing all the courses for that major. I want to pick another major to pass that major, but then again that means I'll stay in school longer and my parents will pay more. What should I do? I don't want to drop out and I don't want to apply to another college. I want to face my problems. How can I be able to achieve my dreams with my grades? Any advice? Thank you in advance and God bless.

A lot of questions on Yahoo are about how to get into an Ivy league school, but hardly anybody ever writes about what happens when you get there! The Ivies and other elite schools like U Chicago, Duke, Stanford, MIT, etc require students to do a LOT of work. You can't just attend class and then skim over the text the day before the exam. As you have discovered, success in these schools requires serious work every single day. You need to be smart, to be hard-working, to have good study skills so that you can use your time efficiently, and to have a good preparation from a good HS where you took all the hard courses. At this point I think the best suggestion is to focus your attention. You can't succeed by swapping from one major to another. You have to pick one major and stick with it. And it also might be a good plan to reduce your course load as much as you can for a term or two. If you keep working hard, things will get better. Be sure to visit the academic tutoring center as much as you can and keep talking to the profs. Good luck.

Unfortunately, if you want to continue with school your'e going to have to transfer to a different school. It doesn't sound like your Ivy league material, but don't let that get you down. You have two choices...Either you have your parents pay tons of money for you to go to a college that you can't handle or....you go to a college that will be easier on your parents wallets and you'll actually be able to graduate. Think about it, Which one sounds better for a job, a guy who graduated at the bottom of his class at a Ivy league school, or a guy who graduated at the top of his class from an average college? I think the latter. It's a tough decision, but the right one.

I think your problem is that you keep changing major. You will never get anywhere if you keep changing. You are bound to be bad at first, pick one and keep working on it until you get good grades. There is no way that you will be good at one straight away, so stop swapping.

This also happened to me before, but whathappenedht be is that my teacher wasn't that good and i got really bad marks in tests. But then my teacher changed and i started to get really good. So maybe you could get your parents or maybe yourself to ask the teacher on what you need to improve to get better grades/marks. If you still start to continue on getting bad marks maybe you should get your parents to have an interview with the teacher or even the principle.

Try getting a tutor and ask questions if something is difficult!

I feel ever thing that u r going through i just failed my first class ever and i feel a little lost i feel that i cant accomplish anything and that i will fail. but i realize that everyone will always have a bump in the road when it comes to school my advice to is u should either do 1 or 2 options. 1: Cut back on ur classes take 2 or 3 classes a semester and if u still feel that its to much for u just take 1 class until u can build up and then add more classes when u r ready and also talk to ur consular that what there for they can help u decide which classes is to much for u right now and advise u to take them later in ur school years. 2: take a semester off just Focus on u so u can determine which major is best for u. a lot of people say taking a break from school is a bad idea because they end up losing track and never going back to school, but if u feel strongly about going to school then taking a break shouldn't be a problem when going back. take some time out for u and never stress ur self out about school. GOOD LUCK P.S> Also talk to ur parents or pray about it that can be helpful

Transfer, take your old school transcript and use your old gpa to get into another school. The most important thing these days is gpa. Its had to pull up your gpa up when it is so low and sometimes its easier to start over. What good is an education if you can't get a good job cause of your gpa.

Take my advice miss, get out of that school. Ivy League schools are way overated. If you are not doing well at this school and you did well at your first school, then the problem is not you, it is the school. You have a 1.5 GPA and it is only going to get better when you can study in a less stressful environment. Tell your parents that it is not working at the Ivy school and that you want to go to a school where you will be happy. With a less stressful workload that will help you decide which major you want to study. Good Luck

Why don't you go to the principle and see if there is a way where you can get a person to help you study and help you by reading the papers you write and then check for any problems. or maybe you can work in the class room and have the teacher check them.

Unfortunately, sometimes facing a problem means acknowledging that it's beyond your ability to solve. If you're doing absolutely everything you should be to improve - and it sounds like you are - and the work is still too overwhelming, then maybe you're just not suited to this school. I know that's not what you want to hear, given your aspirations and the work you've already put in, but you'll hurt your chances at grad school more if you can't find a focus soon and/or the choice of whether or not to leave is made for you due to your continued low performance than if you go somewhere you do have a chance to shine. If you're not ready to think about transferring, at least consider taking a semester off in order to get your head back above water and figure out where you want to go from here. Good luck.
