How do you get the books you need in college?

How do i find out what books to get?

  • I will be going to college soon and i will need to get my books before the classes start. How will I know what books to get for my classes? I dont want to bother my teachers about it because i know they will be teaching summer classes. Will the book store of the college know exactly what book i will need for each class?

  • Answer:

The college book store will know exactly what you need. I suggest going to the book store and scoping out the books and writing down the information and the price ( write down the title, author, publisher, and ISBN #, someone in the bookstore can help you find the ISBN if your not sure what this is but its usually on the book with the bar code), then go home and see if you can find the books on-line. I used to refuse to buy on-line because I was worried about the quality of the books and how long it would take, but you can find reputable sites like Amazon.com, which I use. Its easiest to search by ISBN # because this will give you the exact edition, etc... that you need. This semester, I got a brand new book for $24 that would have cost me $175 in the bookstore, and it only took a week for me to get.

Usually when you go to the college bookstore, they will have all the textbooks set out by subject and then by the class and section. Take your class list with section numbers and professor's names and just walk around till you find all your books. Many college bookstores also have a pre-pack option available, where you tell them what classes you're taking and they gather all your books for you to pick up at once at a designated place.

Yes, most college bookstores are organized by section and have books listed by class. If you know what you're taking just go there and look up each course by section. Don't worry you won't need them right away. PS don't email your professors; if the bookstore does not have them organized this way then they will give you a book list when they pass out the syllabus.

The school's book store web page should have an area to look up your classes (have your schedule and course number/section on hand) and the books you need for them. It's usually not updated until a few weeks before the semester starts. If in doubt, or if you want to buy the books online for a big discount because college book stores are terribly overpriced, by all means contact the professors. You are not bothering them, I promise you. Just write a short, polite email asking for the title, author, edition, and ISBN of the textbook. Saying that you're looking forward to their class helps too.

You don't need to "bother" your professors about the books, on the first class your course syllabus will explain which texts you will need for the course. But if you go to the college bookstore, (at least at mine), they have them tagged with the courses and professors that require them.

Yes, the bookstore will know. Once you have registered for your classes, take in a list of the classes including the codes for the classes (like my foreign language class is FLANG-400-231). They'll tell you the required books. You can probably check on the college's website too.

The school should have it on their website. My univeristy has a link that says "bookstore" and you put in your course codes and it gives you a list of books you need.

They have the couses and sections listed at the campus bookstores. You can find them that way.

the book store of the college should know but dont woryy about bothering them they want to help you and they will be happy to let you know

Every college should give you your schedule after you've registered for your classes, and on that schedule (or some variation of it) it should have your classes and when you take it to the bookstore on campus, hand them the paper and they will most likely be able to find the books for you and probably show you how too so next time you can do it yourself. Just ask them if you're not sure. :)
