Can I get into the University of Texas at Austin?

  • I know about the 8% rule: I'm a Junior in TX. My GPA is 3.8 out of 4 5.02 out of 6 My rank is 161 / 702 (Top 22%) I am in French Club (Treasurer), I'll be President next year. I am also in Clements Earth, NHS and Clements Interact. I have completed more than 100 community service hours. My SAT score is around 2000 I took 1 AP class sophomore year, 2 this year, 4 next year. I also took numerous honors classes. Classes: 5 years of Social Studies / Math / Science I am a minority. I have lived in 5 different countries throughout my life. I am in Varsity Ice Hockey. Assistant Captain this year, maybe Captain next year. With my poor class rank, can I get into UT Austin? And, what else can I do?

You will definitely get into UT. I was an out of stater, with a lot of the same credentials (I have the same GPA, I'm in NHS and things like that, my SAT was around yours, but I was top 15%, less community service hours, and a few less honors/APs, and I had more sports and mock-programs and I have a job), and I got into UT. You rank is not poor, it is good. Being in the top 25% is not looked down upon. I got into UT this year when it was even MORE competitive with the automatic top 10%. It will be easier for you to get one of the other 25% of spots than it was for me to get the 15%-20% that were for review applicants. I would suggest you focus more on your essays when applying and less on your credentials, because your credentials are fine. Don't worry! You are a Texas resident so that gives you a push too :] But really, you should just apply to TAMU because it's a way better school :P

Dude don't worry about it, it looks like you're in great shape. It's really weird this year, they started looking at the non-top 10%ers, which would be the top-8%ers for you, a lot more holistically, like a lot more lol. My friend was barely out of the top 10%, top 11% to be exact, got a 2200 on his SAT, and had a buttload of community service hours from church. I mean =O, you'd think he'd get in right.. but he didn't. I mean I'm not a better candidate than my friend, but i was like top 16% and got a 2130 on my SAT, and a lot of clubs/activities, but I lacked community service hours and really important school activities like sports, band or anything. From my school, here are the people who got in... A cheerleader who was around the top 25% range, a dancer who was also around there, and a football player who was lower than the top 20% (and no this guy did not get a scholarship to play, and he's a little too small to play receiver in the big 12), a girl who dominated debate who was out of the top 25% with a 2020 on her SAT. See, so here's the thing, be involved a whole lot in school, and you will have a better chance of being accepted. I think you're going to be fine! good luck!

With the minority thing, maybe. Otherwise it's unlikely. Because of the law guaranteeing admission to the top 8%, there are huge numbers of otherwise unqualified students who are get in, taking the spots from people like you. You should certainly still try, but you need to also apply to other schools. A 3.8 is pretty good, and you seem to be pretty well rounded so you do have a shot, just not an extremely good one. Good luck man.
