How can I make my personal statement great?

How can I make my UCAS personal statement original?

  • Loads of people put things like "I've always wanted to be a teacher" and it just seems boring and generic to me. How could I make it more original? Thanks.

    Avoid cliche's. You're right, loads of people start off with "Since I was young, I've always wanted to be...". You want to look a little different, but not too original. When I applied to do Law at University, I started off my personal statement with a dictionary definition of what being a lawyer entails. I then worked around that. So try using a famous quotation about teaching etc which will set you apart from the rest, and will intrigue the reader. Good luck. Also look type in "how to write a good personal statement" into google.co.uk. There will be plenty of tips on there :-)

The trick is to create an attention-grabbing opening paragraph, however I will admit that mine for work applications are probably a little cliched. I also don't just say "I've always wanted to be a teacher/librarian/etc" but I say why this field interests me and what I hope to learn from it. Obviously employment statements are a little different as I need to include the skills I already have, but with uni ones it's good to play up your extra-curricular activities to show your personality off a little. Associated activities are even better, eg for teaching applications, be a Brownie/Guide/Cub/Scout/etc helper. If you don't do anything like that at the moment, talk about something you plan to do next summer, eg helping with a holiday club - basically show your enthusiasm for your intended subject.
