What are my chances of getting accepted into an Ivy League School?

  • Currently, I'm a Junior at my high school. Lately, I've been looking more into Ivy League Universities rather than state Universities. I am partially trilingual. I've received numerous awards. For example, I got sixth place in my regional science fair last year. I can get fantastic teacher recommendations. Do you have any advice? What are my chances of getting a half tuition scholarship at Purdue University?

  • Answer:

It sounds like you have a great chance of being accepted at the university of your choice! You've clearly been working very hard in school, and you've done an excellent job rounding out your academics with extracurricular activities. (I hope you've been having a fun social life, too, because that's also a very important part of growing up!!) A dynamic, creative, well-written essay is hugely important for college acceptance, so make sure you write several drafts when the time comes. Of course, different universities value different things... All you can do is try your best, and you've definitely done that. As far as how much scholarship money you'll get: who knows? If you really want to go to a certain school, you'll find a way to pay for it. I took a nearly-full-time waitressing/bartending job at night in addition to my work-study tutoring job to put myself through college. It was tough, but it was worth it. Then, I had to work full-time as a bartender (and take out tons of private bank loans) for graduate school. Again: totally worth it! You'll find a way. I can tell from your posting that you're very determined and driven, and you'll be successful at whatever you set your mind to. Make sure you complete your FAFSA forms on time; I certainly couldn't have afforded my education without the help of government loans and grants! One final note-- I'm a high school English teacher, and I wish I had a whole class full of students like you!! Keep up the amazing work... but don't forget to have fun, too!

Your chances look pretty good. I don't think I saw community service and they like that on an applicant.

You're a minority and your grades look good. So yah, you're probably in.

Honestly, 3%. You know how many people apply to Ivy with 4.5+ GPA and a lot more rigorous curriculum (they take 25+ AP/IB classes) AND holds leadership positions as opposed to joining a bunch of clubs AND won impressive awards made a difference? Your course load looks really easy to me. I took 5 Honors in Freshman, 3 AP and 4 Honors sophmore year, 6 IB classes (these are harder than AP at my school) in junior year, 7 IB classes in Senior Year. I played chess at championship level, won numerous awards, president and captain of chess club, did 125 hours of community service, did Martial arts 11 and 12th grade, joined a few clubs (completely useless bullshit in my opinion since anyone can join clubs). I still think I didn't pull enough all-nighters. Oh well good luck with Ivy League.

Very Very high. You seem like the kind of girl who they would be lucky to have at their school. You sound like an over- achiever which is exactly what they're looking for. If you don't get accepted, it's their loss. (: Good luck!

Knowing multiple languages, even partially, is a plus. If you can't speak fluent english, then you need the TOEFL for admissions. If you're looking at Ivy Leagues you need to take the SAT II in addition to the ACT or SAT. Schools look at your unweighted GPA out of 4.0, and while Ivy Leagues won't give you credit from AP classes, you need to do well, particularly in AP English, to stand a chance. Honors classes mean nothing. Sorry. Finally, you can undoubtedly get a scholarship, most likely full to Purdue.
