What are my chances of getting into the following NY schools?

I got a D in one of my classes...what are my chances now of getting into the schools I applied to?

  • So I got a D in one of my classes, and I've already completed the entire college application process, and all that's left now is for me to wait. However, colleges do ask for an update following the first semester of senior year, and I did pretty bad. So now what I wanna know is...what are my new chances of getting into the schools I applied to? 3.8 unweighted 4.15 weighted 2040 SAT: 720 SATII US History, 670 SATII Math Level 2, 720 SATII English Lit 6 AP exams taken...4 pass with 5's, 1 with 4, and 1 with 0 Founding President CSF Founding President Interact Club Captain Academic Decathlon Secretary of JSA Secretary of Knights and Ladies 550 hrs of community service 2 yrs of work experience 3 yrs Varsity Baseball Boys State Hispanic Senior classes AP Calculus BC - D AP English - A AP Econ - A AP Government - A Painting 2 - A Computers - A AcaDeca - A I applied to Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Columbia, NYU, Emory, Williams, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Princeton

Is there a specific reason you got a D in AP Calculus? It looks like you did a great job with the rest of your classes that semester (all A's is terrific!), but just had some difficulty with the subject matter of Calc. Admissions officers can sometimes be pretty unforgiving, but most will understand some grade problems if caused by external factors. I highly recommend you contact the undergraduate admissions offices of all the schools you applied to and explain your situation. If you have a good reason for your D, they may not count it against you. Otherwise, you may be fighting an uphill battle. You've got some great extracurriculars listed there, and your GPA overall is pretty strong. Your SAT score isn't terrific, but is good enough to put you above the 25th percentile of many of those schools. I am concerned, however, because all of them are incredibly selective and tend to be 'reach' schools for even the most qualified candidates. Each will be looking for any small reason to exclude a borderline applicant, and an unexplained 'D' in your senior year could be it. This is why I highly recommend contacting each school. Be armed with a solid explanation (not excuse), and perhaps also a short update on other successes you've had since you submitted your application (like a recent award, etc.) as this could help offset the bad news somewhat. Best of luck to you.

You straight baby, don't trip on that as long as you already sent in your gpa and scores at that time, you can discuss the issue on why you recieved the D. Also, they will take in consideration you recieved a D in a AP class, so it really isn't a D if it is compared to the regular form, its like you got a C. Talk with the admissions counselor if you still need some validation. Good luck

For the schools that you applied to, that D can make a huge difference. Those are all schools with pretty high admissions standards, making the admissions process pretty competitive. They don't even need a reason to not admit a student, so if you give them one, well, you might be SOL. The flip side is that you seem to be very well rounded and have a whole lot of things going for you. You may not get into one of your dream schools but you're going to get accepted into a good school regardless.

so you are in a AP class and you got a D in that class right? well doesnt that D count as a C because at my school it does.Like if you get a B in a AP class than it counts as a A. i got a D and applied for colleges. One college just sent me a letter saying I was in and than another said i had to re-take the class and i sent them a letter saying that i was and i would get a C or better and then a couple of weeks later, they sent me a letter saying i was in. But i did not Apply to some big schools like you did. Hope i helped some.

You will need to tell them WHY you got the D and show that you have done what it takes to bring that grade up... and learn what you didn't learn. What have you done to make up for this blooper?
