  • Answer:

    1. Go to the University's website and find their admittance requirements and statistics. 2. Work your tail off at school and get the best grades possible. 3. Even being a valedictorian won't get you into the Ivy League if you don't have an extracurricular skill. Colleges want to see what you're really passionate about and what you're good at, so go out there, find a hobby, and excel in it!!! 4. College essays-VERY important. Buy the book "Acing the College Application", by Michele Hernandez. She was an admissions officer in an Ivy League school for a long time and she has tons of helpful, rare, insightful advice on boosting your chances of getting into an Ivy League school. She really knows what the schools are looking for. I HIGHLY recommend that you read this book!!! 5. Colleges are looking for someone who can bring something to their college. Lets say they have two applications from Valedictorians: They both have stellar recomendations. They both did loads of community service. One is on a junior orchestra and the other isn't. Guess whose gonna get picked? Colleges want to see who is going to give to their college and strengthen its prestige. 6. Work. Literally. Consider getting a job. The people in the admissions office, unlike their applicants, were not trust-fund babies and they are in favor of people who actually worked and didn't have everything given to them. I read in "Acing the College Application" (Again: get it!!!) that once they were trying to accept one application from a pile of applicants. Everyone was silent. Finally, someone asked, "Have any of them done any work?". Consider a job, maybe something that relates to your intended area of study. It could give you an edge. 7. Scholarships? Go to Scholarships.com. You make a free account, input information like your grades, ethnicity, hobbies, interests, talents, and organizations that you are apart of, and they will generate a list of all these scholarships that you could do well in based on your personal information. I have an account there, so I can truly say, "It's a very helpful site!" I hope all that helped! Good luck and don't get discouraged! With hard work and some good planning, you'll make it! (once again: read "Acing the College Application"!)

Do you live in NC? If you want to get into a school like Duke, you need to start working hard NOW and keep it up for the rest of your high school career. You should be getting all A's, regardless of whether it's an honors or AP/IB class. Don't take easy classes just to boost your GPA-- colleges aren't stupid; they look at your letter grades more than your GPA. Study for the SAT while you're sophomore and take it at least twice your junior year-- you should get at least a 1300 on the math/verbal. Also take extracurriculars and participate in them EVERY YEAR. Colleges like to see consistency. If you can, also take a language every year. You might even start an academic club, as colleges take high interest in people who take action or hold officer positions in notable organizations. Make sure your college application essays are awesome and good luck... Try the Morehead Scholarship.
