Do I Go to The College Where I Am Close to My Grandparents or Do I Go To the One That I Really Want to Attend?
-
There are two colleges I got accepted to that I am considering going to St. John's (College B) and Frostburg (College A). College A isn't a great college, but it's close enough to my grandparents (which are old and frankly, not going to live much longer) that I could visit and take care of them. I love them. It was an easy college to get into - one of those colleges where all you need to do is be living to get accepted. College B is a hard college to get into - they take about a hundred students a year. It's about four hours away from my grandparents. It's also really, really expensive and everyone graduates with a liberal arts degree (there are no majors). But the learning structure seems wonderful to me. I feel like I belong there. But...my grandparents could die or need me and I'd be all the way on the other side of Maryland. What do I do....? Which do I choose....? I mean, I could send my grandparents letters, but that's not really helping them....

Answer:
I assume you mean the St John's in Annapolis, MD? If so GO THERE. Don't think twice -- it is a great college. you will get a better job when you graduate, and if you want to go to graduate school, will be able to get into a good one. When you think about the cost, you have to include the cost associated with the lower salary you would get at Frostburg. If, on the other hand, you mean St John's in Minnesota, then it is probably better than Frostburg, and you should go there. However, in the unlikely event that you mean St John's University in Queen's NY, then run the other way. Go visit your parents on your vacations.

It’s a complicated situation And I guess it’s for only you to decide, you need to ask yourself some more questions and how much your decision now will affect your future. Do you live with your grandparents at the moment? You should discuss this with them Do they rely on you and only you for care - could someone else take the Burdon from you while you study? And you also need to think about how the two different colleges will affect your future, will you be truly happy at college A, will you end up resenting your grandparents and regretting not going to B. Or maybe you will and up being unhappy at B because you miss your family What is the difference between the employability of graduates from A/B.? You need to think about how it will affect your life after college too. Is it possible to arrange care for your grandparents? If there is an emergency your still not a million miles away. Maybe you could arrange a visit to college B, maybe if you contact them they might let you visit for a week and I think you'd soon know if it’s for you and how much you like it. Then you'd know if that is what you want to do for sure and not move there and it not be what you expected. I say you talk to your grandparents.

uhmmmm i would say go to collage b.! you can always see your grandparents, and like you said, it is a really hard college to get into, and they only accept a certain amount of people. that is like a once in a life time opportunity, but chose what school you want to go to. =)

What a difficult question! You seem like a really caring person, and I admire your dedication to your family. As difficult as this is, I think you should choose College B. When your grandparents are gone, will they want you to have sacrificed your education for them? I bet they want what's best for you, even if it means seeing you less or getting less help. Your happiness probably means most to them. Do you want them to die knowing you are unhappy? The bottom line is to follow your heart. This isn't really a question anyone else can answer for you. You need to look deep inside yourself and make the decision. I gave you my opinion, but make sure to try to answer this question on your own as well!

Well there are Pros and cons to everything you do. College A will allow you to study and look after your grandparents. But the way of studying there may not be up to your level. College B will allow you to study the way you want it. But you will be unable to help them right away, if they needed your help.

go to the better school...it will help you live a fulfilling life....which is what i am sure your grandparents want for you...get yourself a camera and send them lots of pictures and emails...and with cell phones these days weekend calling is free so is evenings.... your grandparents will be proud of you for being one of only 100 students to get into that school it is a great accomplishment and they should be very proud of you... i worried about the same when i took an offer for a job out of state...i worried about my grandmother and missing her...i moved back 4 years later....that was 8 years ago....she is now 93 and still here...the only thing she says is to make sure i tell her when i am leaving the area and get her an address so she can write to me

Go to college B because you will regret it if you dont.It seems like you worked really hard to get into it.You could always take a trip every other weekend to visit them, and stay in touch with them everyday. Call them. I think that you really owe it to yourself.
