How hard is it to get into columbia university?
-
So far I am in the 8th grade. But they say it's never to early to start thinking ahead. And I really want to be a journalist. I heard Columbia University has one of the best jounalism programs. So I would like to go there. I am in all advanced classes and have a really good GPA(making mostly A's and B's here and there). But I need to know how to better prepare. So, how hard is it to get in to Columbia? Because I really want to go there!

Hey Madi. Columbia University is one of the best schools indeed and the fact that you are already thinking about college is very important. I really want to go there too. As and Bs are not going to help, you have to have only As ( meaning you can have Bs but the quarter or semester final should be an A, thats all that matters), You should also have good SAT scores ;700 and above in most cases, although you might get in with pretty lower scores I believe if you ARE or make them believe you are "special" : -), a brilliant admission essay is the best opportunity for you to show that and balance out some things that they might not like about your scores or grades. You have to have a great number of extracurricular activities such as clubs, volunteering etc. You should definitely learn at least one FOREIGN LANGUAGE for at least two years in HS otherwise you will not get in I am sure. You should also take advanced classes such as Honors and AP and even if you dont take the AP exam ,( and im not taking them) those classes are still very important as they bring your GPA up. Columbia Also requires TWO Subject tests. Which is another opportunity for you to prove that you are a bright student. You also need letters of Recommendation from your teachers. choose the best TWO from teachers in whose class you think you did the best job or classes that are the most relevant to the degree you want to pursue in college (journalism in this case). Dont ask just two teachers, ask everyone who you think is important, then if you will not like some of the letters you will choose another one and so on... I have higher than average scores on the SATs, they are nothing special - with MATH score being the lowest - but right now I am taking SAT US history and World history subject tests with hopes of getting pretty high scores on those .( remember it is required, you can choose two from any of the 20 subjects) Despite the fact that first one and a half year in HS I had some Bs , right now I have all As and several honors and AP classes. Next year will be my senior year and I plan to take even more. I hope to overweight my lower SAT scores with the fact that I speak three foreign languages pretty well. So it is absolutely individual, you know better how to make yourself stand out. And also, dont forget that www.Collegeboard.com is your best friend. http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?match=true&collegeId=3853&searchType=college&type=qfs&word=columbia%20university Type any college and you will get any kind of information you need, all the DATA !

It's not Ivy League for nothing. Mostly A's and B's aren't going to cut it. You should have all A's and an extremely rare B. For the entire 4 years of high school.

Columbia is an Ivy League school and because a lot of very qualified students apply every year, they really only take the best of the best. For the freshman class that entered in Fall of 2007, Over 21,000 people applied and only about 2200 were admitted. With an overall admit rate of about 10.6% 92% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% and 98% were in the top 20%. You really need to make sure that you are keeping your grades up and taking all of the AP and Honors classes that your school offers. While your GPA is important, you really want to make sure your class rank stays up. Also get involved in your community and school. Schools like to see that you are well-rounded and don't just spend all of your time studying. Good luck! :)

I'm in the same boat! I'm just going to try hard and hope to get in... I hope someone here has a better solution! I guess we could write them a letter?
