How do I become a psychiatrist?
-
How long do you go to college? I imagine you would go to medical school, how long does that last? I watch to many doctor shows so I figure there will be a residency with it, how long does it last and how does it work? Would I have to learn how to do all of the doctor stuff and then pick a specialty or something? Or will I just do psychiatry? Thanks for your help!

Answer:
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who took a caouple psychology classes. They are very much not psychologists. Psychiatrists mostly do medication management. You'll need a 4 year college degree. The degree can be in anything at all - journalism, english, business, anything. However, many get one in a pre medicine discipline such as biology. physiology, chemistry, etc. because you need some pre requisites and it can help in med school and some feel looks better on an application. OK, first, 4 year degree, then you'll have to go to medical school with all the other geeks - med school is another 4 yrs. Then comes residency, which will typically be 4 years depending on the program you get into, with the bulk of that on a psych concentration. First 6 months will be more general medicine (primary care, internal med, pediatrics, etc.), next 3.5 yrs will be fellowships in different psych disciplines (child, forensics, consult, etc). Best of luck.

Since a Psychiatrist a Medical Doctor, you will have to attend Medical School. Prior to doing so, you will need a Bachelor Degree. The degree can be in any field that interests you, but you will need to complete the Prerequisite Courses in Maths and Sciences in order to be eligible, along with maintaining a high gpa (3.5 or higher) and doing well on the MCAT. You will then spend four years in Medical School. While in Medical School, your first two years will be spent on the fundamentals of science. Your remaining two years will be spent in Clinical Rotations, where you will learn work in all areas of Medicine. Upon completion, you will choose your specialty (Psychiatry) and you will have another 4 years spent in Residency. So, you're looking at about 12 years of school and training altogether.

4 years college 4 years medical school 4 years psychiatry residency All medical students receive the same education regardless of their intended specialty.
