What are the requirements to study abroad at LSE (London School of Economics?

London School of Economics External Diploma/certificate, a good idea or not if I would like to go to IVY grad?

  • I graduated from a private US university and majored in Economics. My goal in the next two years is to go back to school and get a Masters in Quantitative Finance. For that I need to go back to school and take a few introductory math courses. Now, I would like to get my Ms from a really good school such as Harvard, Columbia, NYU or Princeton. My questions, Im not sure if, in order to get the extra credits i need in order to meet with the min requirements, I should take the courses at a 1) community college, 2) apply as a special student (can take the courses i need at a good college but its expensive since i dont get financial assistance - 1300 per credit..one class is up to 4 credits) or 3) get a diploma from LSE external system in Mathematics. Some people say that when applying to Ivy league schools having an external degree (via online) doesnt look good or doesnt help at all. What do you think? I dont want to waste my money if i know its not going to help me. I tried looking into other programs offered by US universities but all of them are a lot more expensive than LSE, i wonder why..Thanks

If you do well in the LSE course, it really doesn't detract from your CV, and it may actually open some doors in your career in the future, since it may allow you access to work in England that would otherwise not be open to you. Since you do not know the future any more than I do, that might be a nice door. By extension, it might open opportunities in other parts of the British commonwealth... I am reminded of a lawyer I know who earned his degree in Canada, but had taken one course at a US uni. He had no trouble being admitted to the Bar in the US, only because of that one course. He advised me that I should take a course or two from a school in the British Commonwealth if I wanted to make it easier to move internationally in the future.

I'm interested that you think the LSE is cheaper than US universities. Make sure you are looking at the right information. For home and EU students, the cost is rather inexpensive. For almost every British university program for Americans, the cost is huge. So, I'm concerned that you're not looking at the right fee information. Make sure to get the fees for non-EU, non-Commonwealth students (unless you are in fact a UK, EU or Commonwealth citizen/subject). Chances are good that the particular courses you need to satisfy the Ivy Leaguers will not be accepted from the LSE's distance ed. program. This is not because it is distance education, but rather because the British system doesn't translate well into the American one. My Univ. of London degree is accepted here as a credential, but it is a counted as a degree with zero credit hours. The LSE looks good on a resume / c.v., but I'm not sure it will help you in your particular quest here.
