Alpha Kappa Alpha Event Advice NEEDED!?

• Hello. I want to ask any members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. this question. I will be attending an event soon sponsored by the Graduate chapter I am looking to seek membership within. My question is, I do not know any of the members and I am EXTREMELY nervous about attending this event alone. I tend to be a shy person so I am not sure what to do or how to interact with other's at the party. I know this event matters a lot because two Members know of my interest and I am sure they are looking for me to be there. I just don't know how to mingle with the rest of the chapter Members. Would anyone out there help me with some words of encouragement or advice as to how to carry myself alone at this event? Should I approach other women? Should I ask questions related to the Chapter? Any advice will help me at this point. I totally appreciate everyone who responds and I hope I am not being too forward or offending any Members with this question. Thank you in advance.

  Hello! First I just want to take the time out to encourage you on your journey to become a member of my sorority! It is a big decision and one that you will have a lifetime to enjoy should membership be offered to you! Regarding your question: In attending the event that my sorors are having the very first peice of advice that I have for you is to be confident! I know that in some ways that is easier said than done, but there are some ways for you to work on it! First look in the mirror and point out all of the wonderful things about you and how they benefit you and how they can be used to benefit others. Thenget with a friend and have them write a letter of encouragement to you and seal it. Open it as you are on your way to the event and it will boost your confidence, and then revisit the the positive things that you noted about yourself when you were in the mirror and review how you said that they would be helpful to other and then apply how you can use those skills to benefit the sorority. Make sure that you have done some basic research regarding the sorority so that when you are speaking to my sorors and the other women there you show respect and tact. Ask questions, very general ones, like, what made them choose AKA over the other sororities on campus. You can also ask things such as what are some of their proudest moments since they became members of the sorority and what are some of the things that they can see themselves doing over the next five years that will caterpult them forward in their career and in some of the things that they might like to see accomplished within the sorority, specifically some things that they might want to lead and implement. And when they answer tactfully fit in how your attributes might be able to assist in making some of those goals to come to fruition. That way the sorors can see that you are interested in more than wearing a t-shirt today, but in advancing the sorority and making it bigger, better and stronger for tomorrow. In asking and answering question in that conversational format you have shown the aforementioned interest and demonstrated thatyou have some useful ideas that may be useful in assisting the sorors in that chapter to meet some of the goals that they may have at the current time or you may have even proved yourself to be an innovator by giving the sorors some ideas for things that they can to do to be of service. It is strengths such as those that we look for in our candidates.
