What is required from an American High School student to get into a university in England like Oxford?
-
I am an American girl in my second year of high school and I would love to get into a university in England like Oxford to study medicine but as an American I do not know the requirements to get into a university in England. I am aware that the requirements in England and America are different so if anyone can please help me by telling me what is required that would really be great. Thank you very much in advance =]

Answer:
To get into Oxford or Cambridge, the requirements are pretty much the same as getting into a school like Harvard or Princeton. You are taling about top five universities world wide. To be qualified you will need a 3.8+ unweighted GPA with lots of AP and honors classes. You would need to be able to get an SAT score in the 2200+ range. You would need to write a killer admissions essay. Being qualified probably gives you a 10% chance of getting in, as these schools reject far more qualified students than they accept.

SAT 1 scores of at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics and preferably also 700 or more in the new Writing Paper, giving a combined score of at least 2,100. OR ACT with a score of at least 32 out of 36. AND Grades 4 or 5 in two or more Advanced Placement tests in appropriate subjects OR SAT II in a good spread of three or four subjects at 700 or better. There would also be specific subject requirements. You apply for all UK universities through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) and for Oxford and Cambridge, due to it's competitiveness, this must be done before October in the year before you plan to study. Oxford, however, it might be worth you knowing, has a very small medical department; but it's not really what they're most well known for (I didn't know they even did medicine until like last week...). They're most well known for arts and humanities subjects. Your chance of getting into Oxford for medicine is likely to be very small. Cambridge is most known for medicine. You may be better off considering Cambridge.

Gaining admission into Oxford is pretty much along the same lines as our Ivy League schools (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.). For students from the states wishing to go to Oxford, the MINIMUM requirements to be considered would be: --SAT I scores of at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics 700 or more in the Writing Paper (so a 2100 combined) --ACT score of at least 32 out of 36. --A grade of 5 in two or more AP tests --2 or 3 SAT II subjects at 700 or better. As far as GPA goes, the more AP classes you can take the better, and as close to a perfect GPA as you can (4.0/5.0 weighted/unweighted).

US qualifications Successful candidates would typically have an excellent High School record supplemented by SAT I scores of at least 1,400 in Critical Reading and Mathematics and preferably also 700 or more in the Writing Paper, giving a combined score of at least 2,100, or ACT with a score of at least 32 out of 36. They would also expect three Advanced Placement tests in appropriate subjects with two at grade 5 and one at grade 4 or SAT II two or three appropriate subjects at 700 or better.
