What is the difference between college and university?

What is the difference between college and university in America? Thanks. =)?

  • Ok, i'm English (well, all my contacts know that, but other YAers might not lol), and I know that what is called "college" and "university" in America is different to the UK. In the UK, college is year 12 and year 13.... Ages 16 to 18. We do qualifications called A levels, in 3 or 4 subjects. Then University after that, to do a degree, which last three or four years. If we want a masters, we stay on at Uni for an extra year, and then you can still stay on to complete a PHD if you want. I've heard that people get degrees at college in America.... Yet i've still heard that you have universities. What is the difference between college and university in America? Thank you =D

  • Answer:

College and an university are the same thing here. student go there after they finish high school at age 18. Both will offer a Bachelor degree, which takes four years to complete. Universities tend to be larger and offer Masters and Doctorate degrees. both are good, one is not better than the other. student in the US will say "college" even if they are at an university. ie. I am going to college next year at Ohio State. Even though Ohio State is an university. we will never say "uni". check out some US school sites yourself

There isn't one. I go to a university, but we generally call it college. We also don't use the term university to refer to the experience, only the institution itself. For example, we might say "I go to Harvard University" (which I definitely don't btw lol) but we wouldn't say "I'm in university." We do have community colleges where you get 2 year degrees as opposed to universities where you get 4 year degrees. However, generally, when an American refers to college, it doesn't specifically mean community college.

Your university in England is what our universities and colleges are, there's just two different names. Universities seem to be more prestigious, but maybe that's just my opinion. At a four year university or college, a student earns either an associate's and bachelor's If they want a master's degree, it usually takes 1 or 2 years, like your school does. As for PhD, that can take many years, I believe for a doctor it's 4 years of medical school, and then 4 years of residency. US school system summarized is this: Age 5-11 is elementary school, 11-13 is middle school or junior high, ages 14-18 is high school. 18-22 college/university. Hopefully I've provided you with enough information. :D

None. They are both 4 year schools, giving degrees. Students are usually 18-22 years old. Universities are usually bigger.

When a US school is called a “College” it is a single school. If it is a “University” it is a collection of several colleges. When you go to a university you actually attend a college that is part of the university. For example, my daughter is at the College of Information Technology, Engineering and Sciences which is part of a larger university. The university also has a college of liberal arts and a college of medicine. As well, generally colleges are only undergrad schools. Schools with graduate programs are usually called universities. There are colleges with graduate programs but not a lot. If you are going for an undergrad degree it is fine to go to a 4 year college instead of a university. However, in Canada, a “college” is what is called a “community college in the USA. The 4 year schools in Canada are Universities.

Colleges tend to be smaller than universities and to have smaller course offerings. They also tend to offer almost exclusively bachelor's degrees. Universities are a collection of colleges (mine has business, engineering, architecture, social work, arts & sciences, and several other colleges) and often have graduate schools that offer masters degrees and higher.

college in America is where folks get their Bachelors Degree. Community Colleges is where folks get their Associates of Arts Degrees. An University is where folks get there Masters amd Doctorate Degrees. you can still get a Bachelors Degree at an University.
