What type of jobs will a major in International Studies get you?

  • I want a job that will let me see the world and have a decent income. I was considering majoring in international studies or doing a double major with international studies and political science. Will these majors get me a good job and if so what type of job would be a possibility?

    International studies can lead you into things like banking or firms that work overseas. I would link it with an MBA much more than political science. If you are interested in that angle, I recommend taking the Foreign Service exam after graduation. If you pass that, you can work at the many embassies and consulates all across the globe. It is also a good idea to gain fluency in at least one foreign language. Companies that do work with foreign countries are more inclined to hire people that speak the language of the country they work with. I have lived and worked in Japan for the last 8 years.

Hon, you need to stay away from any major with "Studies" in the name. They're bad news. Those are useless soft degrees just to get you employed somewhere...anywhere. Any "Something Studies" degree is not going to prepare you for any particular job. It really doesn't matter what you get your degree in unless you're going into medicine, law, engineering, or something along those lines. Just get a degree in anything as long as it's not "Something Studies" degree. People rarely work in their related degree fields.
