Is computer support a good career choice?

My mom hates my career choice and says she doesn't support me (ranting/long)?

  • I want to get my bachelor's degree in Veterinary technology, but my mom is extremely opposed to this. I've wanted to be a vet tech since I was about 12. My mom thought it was a phase, but now I'm 16 and I still want this. All my life I've been in honors and AP classes and I have a 3.7 GPA unweighted and a 4.3 weighted. The harder I work the more miserable I am. I dropped AP classes and switched to college w/ 2 day a week classes and I feel so much less stressed. I don't want to run a business or become a doctor, or vet, or anything like that. I've talked to several vet techs and decided that I like the sound of the job even though they warned me it is physically/emotionally straining and with low pay. My mom was convinced I was gonna be a doctor and last year I volunteered at a hospital and almost lost my lunch every day. Dog puke, feces, blood, body in general, I am comfortable with. Human blood, feces, puke, naked body etc. No, just no. I will be sick for the rest of the day. I absolutely hated it. I hate GOING to the hospital, let alone working there. But animals, I just love. I can't recall a time when I didn't know a dog's breed, even if it was mixed. I helped my aunt at her malamute kennel/rescue/boarding business. Her dogs were champions in the ring and on sleds. ANYWAYS she called me into the living room the other day and told me that If I wanted to go to school to make "minimum wage" I would have to do it by myself because she wasn't going to financially support me. And if you don't know about vet teching, just to let you know I would earn more with my B.S., though still not a lot enough to survive on. What should I do? I want to become one but It's going to be hard w/o my mom there to support me.

  • Answer:

it is your life live it the way you want. You do have to realize that vet techs don't make a lot of money and that might be your mom's concern. But speaking as someone who regrets not following her passion I say if you want to be a vet tech go for it!. You need to be happy. So go back to studying hard in school take those AP classes. Take the classes you will need to get you on the right path to your dreams. Don't let her get you down. Follow your dream.

When I was going to college, my mom encouraged me to major in computer science, but I saw the math requirements and was extremely uncomfortable. I majored in education and my mom still supported me because it was my decision. Your mom needs to realize that it's your decision. You need to be happy with what you want to do.

Tell her that she is your MOTHER and should support you no matter what (there are exceptions though). That's just mean. I'm sure she'll come around, but follow your passions and don't let anyone run your life.

Could you compromise on doctor of veterinary medicine? Maybe vet techs don't earn much, but DVM's earn more. Specialize in companion animals (cats, dogs), because there is no Medicare to limit your fees, and people will pay anything to keep their pets alive. You will go four years to get a BS in the same subjects as for application to med school. I am in the last 10 months of a losing battle before my cat Pickles dies of kidney failure. They will be expensive months. You might as well join the profession at the highest level and make a good living too.

Vet tech means you would be a low paid assistant to a veterinarian. If you go that direction, never, ever ask your parents to help you out with money and never complain to them that you wish you made more money. You will get a loud earful. Because really, low pay really sucks after a few years. Since you have such a high GPA you should try for some sort of degree. How about a degree in agriculture specializing in Animal Husbandry. Then volunteer at an SPCA on the weekends.
