How Do I Become A Pediatrician?

How do I become a Pediatrician step by step after high school?

  • Hello, first question on yahoo. I am currently a high school junior, over the past 2 years, I have developed a great interest in medical profession, especially in pediatric and surgery. I really wish to be a pediatric doctor after I graduate from medical school. I know generally the process, from 4-years of college to medical school, couple years of residency etc. **Now I am trying to figure out the best way to become a pediatrician, things that I need to do as prerequisites, I really appreciate if you could just talk about what you know on this medical profession: things that is needed to done during high school; best courses to take; things I need to prepare ahead of time; a time line of the whole process.**

First of all, you really don't have to worry about any courses you're taking in high school as medical schools will not be looking that far back. In college you just need to make sure that you take the right prerequisites, which usually consist of Anatomy and Physiology I & II (8 credits) , Inorganic Chemistry (8 credits), Organic Chemistry (8 credits), Physics (8 credits), and a Microbiology course of some kind. Calculus and Stats are not always required, but will be beneficial to take. Make sure you take most of your prerequisites by your Junior year of college as you will be needing to take your MCAT in the spring of your junior year or summer after at the very latest. Get a review book to study for your MCATs, they are very helpful. Also you can take courses to help you review and prepare. It's important to get a good score on the MCAT as well as maintaining a high GPA in college. You will apply to med schools probably the summer after your Junior year and do interviews the fall of your Senior year. But, you have a few years. For now, just enjoy high school, get good grades so that you can get into a good college and maybe start volunteering at a hospital to make sure medicine is what you want to go into...it is a huge commitment. Good luck!
