Who is a graphic designer?

What exactly does a graphic designer do?

  • I've been told that I should try graphic design in college (I'm a junior in high school now) & as a career. But, what does a graphic designer do? What kinds of jobs would one who majors in graphic design in college have after graduating? What classes should I take now to prepare to major in it in college if it's something I want to do? Thanks in advance! =)

    Go to www.aiga.org and look at their information on design education and design careers. AIGA is the professional organization for graphic design and so you know you are getting solid information there. To prepare, pump up your basic drawing skills because you will need to submit a portfolio to be accepted into a reputable design program. Most of them look closely at drawing in entrance portfolios. Yes, graphic designers need reasonably good drawing skills because that's how ideas are developed and refined before jumping onto the computer. They'll look at computer work, advertising, photo, and other art areas too but the drawings are weighed most heavily. Good luck! It is a great profession with lots of opportunity.

A graphic designer does graphics in many different areas. You could work for an ad agency, you could work in a print production department, or an art department of a company. You could design Websites. You could specialize in illustrations, abstract, it all depends. There are many jobs. You would first have to decide what you like. That is a very broad field. I am graphic designer, but I work for an ad agency, and I've worked in the corporate world. My friend is a graphic designer, and he designs album covers for artists. The possibilities are endless.

I am in an Information Technology program for Graphic Designers in high school. It's my school's specialty program. We design billboards, cd covers, marketing campaigns, dvd covers, posters, comic strips, t-shirts, logos...etc much of it has to do with advertising. Being familiar with computers is pretty much essential so i would reccomend a class in that--thats the direction all of this is going these days. As for career wise-- i have no clue. haha im majoring in history.

Graphic Designers design ad's, brochures, commercials, do photo editing, etc.... Its a fun field to be in. I would recommend taking art, computer and graphic design classes and become familiar with the Adobe software such as Adobe Photoshop, In Design, etc.... Do some internships to gain experience. You can also volunteer your talents (you can put that on your resume too) by designing brochures, ads, flyer's, cards, whatever, to your friends, family, clubs (like drama groups) or non-profits. It'll give you experience and also build your portfolio. Be sure to keep a copy of anything you design for someone. You'll need it for your portfolio to show your future employers.

they make loads of money,if they work for the right people. mostly they design anything from ads to pictures for anything really.a lot of the time they use photoshop,so getting skills in that would be a good idea.

a graphic designer is some one who creates commercials and all the animation that goes along with that they have to know alot about computers and understand alot of there systems and you have to have a want to drawl it is not easy being a graffic no way no how for examples cartoonists are graphic designers you would be suprised at all they do
