Which classes do I take to become a dermatologist?

What education is needed to become a dermatologist? What classes should you take in high school and after?

  • Answer:

To become a dermatologist -- you should: 1. Take lots of AP classes in High School -- especially in Math, Biology and the Sciences -- so that you can get into the best university possible. 2. In college you can have any major -- as long as you take the Pre-Med classes (you can do a Google or Yahoo search to find these). While you can have any major -- it is a good idea to do more than the minimum -- so you should think about majoring in biology or chemistry. 3. After getting your BS, go to medical school for four years. The requirements for Dermatology are the same as those for any other medical field -- though you may be able to take some electives related to Dermatology in your third and fourth year. 4. After getting your MD, spend a year as a medical intern & then spend three years in a Dermatology Residency. 5. After your residency, take the Board Exam to become certified in your field. If all goes well, you should be a dermatologist by the time you turn 30.

As some people have posted, dermatologists are doctors, so it doesn't matter what you take in high school as long as you do something you like... same once you get to undergraduate. As an undergraduate you'll have to go through a pre-med program but you can still major in other things like History or Political Science etc... Medical Schools want you to have a broad academic background... not just sciences, trust me.

Dermatologists are doctors. High school doesn't matter so much, but you should definitely take challenging enough courses to look good on your transcript, so you can get into a good college. In college you'd need to be pre-med.
