Criminal Investigation?

Criminal Investigation as a pre-law major?

  • I am going to college this fall, and I plan on pursuing law school after my BA. I've been looking around for a major, and I found Criminal Investigation to be a fairly interesting one, and is offered in a college I was accepted into. I plan on hopefully become a prosecutor, and thought this may be helpful on a resume, as well as helpful in making me a better prosecutor. Would this be a good major to pursue for pre-law? Or will this set me back?

  • Answer:

Generally, you can major in almost anything as an undergraduate. There are two majors which several law school admissions faculty have told me are NOT good, though, since they are considered to be light-weight -- anything PE related, and sociology. That opinion might be wrong, but it is what it is, and should be better known. Law schools seek a diverse student body, and I attended law school with math majors, pharmacists, history majors, etc -- about the whole range. There were students who were former nuns, a couple of physicians, a retired Brigadier General with jet fighter experience, a news anchor from a major TV network, two rabbis, several teachers, college professors, housewives, and professional writers. I suggest that you major in something you love, and something which will be useful as a career completely outside of law -- you may not be admitted, or may decide you want to do something else, or may decide law school is simply far too expensive.
