Is being a neonatologist a good job?

Should I be a Marine Biologist, Zoologist, Neonatologist, Oncologist, or Movie Editor?

  • I'm applying to colleges next year... I honestly have no idea what I want to be and I've narrowed it down to these 5 subjects. I'm really interested in all of these subjects! Marine Biologist - I love the ocean and fish, and would love to work at Sea World as a vet! Zoologist - I would loveeee to work at the zoo with elephants and giraffes and such Neonatologist - (if you don't know what it is, it's basically a baby doctor who works with newborn babies, with health conditions like really premature) I just love babies, and I've always been interested in being a doctor... Oncologist - It's a cancer doctor, I'd like to work in Pediatric Oncology... Just something that sounds really interesting to me Movie Editor - I know this is really random and doesn't fit in with my other job choices... but I really like film stuff and I make a lot of home movies and things sooo... any ideas? Pro/cons? Suggestions?. Thanks! :)

You're having almost exactly the same problem I had when I was in your position. First I just want to say: don't stress about it (although I know you will!). You're probably one of those people who could be happy and successful doing anything. When you finally do make a decision, of course you'll regret having to give up something else, but you'll also feel a lot better about having a plan for the future. Now to your question. It depends a lot, actually, on your school grades and how good a uni you want to get into. All of the biology/medicine related career paths will need good grades. The movie editor one (yes, I had that one too!) will be easier to get into but also a lot less stable after you graduate. I'm sure you've heard this before, but you can always take up movie editing as a hobby later in life. You can go from being a marine biologist to a movie editor but probably not the other around, so I'd recommend not going for that one no matter how much you love. Personally, I think the first two sound a lot more fun than neonatologist or oncologist, and it also depends on how much stress you want to be under in working life. Good luck!

Marine bio isn't a good major for a vet. It's not offered at very good schools, so attending a lower ranked school for that particular major will hurt your chances of getting into vet school after college (and vet schools are extremely competitive). You'd just want a bio major. Also, Sea World probably only has one vet, which means the job might come available every 20 years. Not really something you'd want to count on. Zoologist is more likely to get you a job at a zoo with only a bachelors degree. Neonatologists mostly have to work with dying babies, which probably isn't as much fun as you seem to think it will be, but either them or an oncologist has 8 years of college and med school before they start studying their specialty (or any other specialty). Movie editor probably wouldn't be hard to study, but it might be hard to find a job you're really interested in.
