What to wear on a college interview?

  • What is a good outfit for a girl to wear on a college interview? I'll be in New England, so I want to stay warm, and I'll be doing a little walking as well, so nothing too constricting. Also, any tips on acing the interview? Thanks!

Dress for success. Of course you want to be bundled up, but once you arrive you want to be in business attire. This means conservative colored blazer style jacket, with slacks or skirt. Boots with heels or dress shoes, but no sneakers, sweats, sweatshirts, flannel... etc. Hair, makeup, nails should be on the conservative side too. And if you have multiple piercings, take them all out, but one. If you have a nose or eyebrow ring get rid of it for the day. Hair should be out of your face, and resist the impulse to play with it during the interview. Clip bangs securely out of your face. Don't dye it bright green the night before the interview. Jewelry should be quiet - no jangly earrings, bracletts, etc. Less is more. And if you have a tatoo - put a band aid over it. You can ace the interview by knowing why you want to attend this college. Why is this school a good fit for you? Answer with personal specifics not just, "It's the best school for my major." College admissions people want students who will contribute to the vitality of their campus, so what do you plan to do once you get there? Why is this school a good place to do that? Show them you've done your homework, and that you plan to be an active, contributing student and that their university will be a better place because you're enrolled. Bring along photos or a small portfolio showcasing examples of your passions. Eventually they're going to ask if there's anything you want them to know about you. This is your "prop" to prompt you if you get nervous. Don't make everything about you academic. If you're a quilter, bring a photo of your quilt. If you're a dog fancier, bring a picture of your dog. Two things you want to know before you go... What are your personal strengths? AND What are your personal weaknesses. Some form of these quesitons will come up and you don't want to say that you have none. Be prepared for the "future" question. "Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" And be prepared for the silly question, "If you were a candy bar, what kind would you be?" Spit out the gum before you get there. Arrive 20 minutes early and find the restroom before you go in for the interview. Don't bring a cup of Starbucks in to the interview with you. Take a deep breath and smile. They're gonna love you!

Always don't over do it. Wear pearl earrings (fakes OK) and no other jewelry except a watch. You must have a watch. A grey long skirt. White blouse. No cleavage. No perfume. Very little if any make-up. Lots of antiperspirant so you don't have sweaty underarms. Hair in some kind of conservative style probably most like what you usually wear anyway. If you are nervous say you are nervous and make a joke out of it and after that you will be surprised how at ease you will feel. Jokes always disarms situations. And above all; be yourself! Smile lots too. Good luck sweetie!

You do not want to overdo it as suggested by the first answer. If I were you I would just try to dress smart but I would not try to look too proffessional as they might see it as you are trying to hard. If you were a guy I would suggest a polo and khakis.

As a female I understand walking around in heels on a college campus and it hurts when you have to do it all day! So I would suggest some nice flat dress shoes instead. Also a nice pants suit would do you good as long as you get one that is comfortable as well as professional. Hope that helps!

Business professional attire if you have it - that means a suit (and tie for men). If you don't have a business suit, I suggest you get one; you'll need it for internship interviews once you start college, and eventually a full time position. It's better to err on the side of being overdressed and make a strong positive impression than to underdress and make a strong negative impression.
