What are some tips for being a great server in a restaurant? what type of server do managers want to hire?

• what qualities do managers look for when they are hiring people? i met a server today when i went in to apply for a job, because the server made me feel comfortable and special and the server was confident. i knew that the server was just doing their job, i've worked in restauarants before, but i thought wow, i want to be like that person. how do i do what they did?

  1. Be on time or five to ten minutes early. ALWAYS. 2.If you don't know how to do something you are asked to do, attempt your best to do it anyways. 3.Do NOT be afraid to ask how something is done. (or where something goes, or any other question) 4.Practice your LISTENING!!! It is SO important to LISTEN in restaurant service. Customers do not like to repeat themselves. It can be embarressing to have to go back to a table and ask again how they want their steak cooked or what sort of vegetable they would like on the side. Get it the first time, down on paper. The same goes for instruction from your boss or trainer. It demonstrates such a good quality in a person if they are able to listen well and only have to be told once. 5.If something intimidates you, get over it. Fast. Instead of continuously asking a more experienced server to help you, (i.e. do something for you, like recite the specials to a table) you are hurting yourself because your boss will think you are incapable of your duties and your table might find you incompetant in delivering their order correctly. DO WHAT IS ASKED OF YOU. PERIOD. 6. This is the most important one. If you find yourself at work, standing alone, no one has given you a little job to do, you MUST figure out for yourself something you can do and go do it. Never is there ever a moment in a restaurant where all the work is entirely complete. Find something and clean it. Look for something you can re-stock. Sugars, salt and pepper, napkins, silverware...If you have the ability to make yourself busy you will be so much more valueable to your boss than if you stand around like a statue waiting for somebody to tell you what to do. Also the whole point of working a table is to create such a good experience that they will want to come back. and if you really do a good job, they might even request your section. I also wanted to say that its so simple...waiting tables. people wish to have a delicious meal made for them. they take turns telling YOU what THEY want, and how they want it. then YOU are responsible for bringing them exactly what they told you to bring. In order to do this, you tell certain people you work with what to make and how to make it. when its ready, you carry it back to the people who asked for it. That's it. plain and simple. and if you do it with a smile on your face and as if you are more than happy to make the meal happen for them, they, in turn, will reward you for doing so. period.
