How often does Gordon Ramsay actually cook in his restaurants?

  • The main ones I mean, Claridges, The Gordon Ramsay on Royal Hospital Road. I just don't think he should be called a chef still if he is only cooking once a week, more of a tv star now. thanks

    Most if not all the celebrity chefs on the telly in the UK and US have a staff that runs each unit, and a chef for them, with Gordon Ramsey, Jamie Oliver and others they make appearances at there outlets, may muck in once and awhile for show, but there not slogging around every night, I am a former chef from Canada, I have a number of UK chef mates (visit and muck in myself, once and a while), even worked with a guy here in Canada that worked for Gary Rhodes in Manchester. With several units, book tours, TV shows and personal appearances on talk show in the UK and US, plus flogging there foods and cookware, they would be ground to a pulp if they had to muck in at every place they own.

A chef is a bit like an architect, he draws up plans for food and has skilled craftsmen (cooks) actually make the food. Architects will often come to oversee the construction of a building, but generally don't roll up their sleeves and start hanging drywall...but of course, it depends on how far along the chef is in building his business. In the beginning, no doubt Ramsay had to do much of the cooking himself until he could afford a larger staff and switch to a more supervisorial and administrative role, like most chefs.
