Restaurant tips for a waiter?

I have a friend that works as a waiter at a Chinese restaurant, he is being payed min wage, BUT when someone leaves a tip the restaurant owner doesn't allow him to keep the tips. She makes her workers put the tips in a box for her. Is this illegal? Because there are times where he has tables of 15 and people leave tips of $35 plus and they are not allowed to keep it even though he was the one taking care of the table. Thanks in advance.

It's illegal for restaurant owners/management to collect tips in most states. I've never heard of this at all. I'm pretty sure that this is illegal. Contact the labor board. Here is a # for your area. (303) 318-8000

Definitely illegal. Is the owner reporting these "tips" as wages. In this case the owner could have some serious problems in the payment of taxes.
