Hostess Interview At a Restaurant?

Upscale Steakhouse Hostess Interview?

  • I have an interview for a hostess position at an expensive, upscale restaurant in about a week. Any suggestions for how to land the job? Any idea what the interview questions will be? I'm slightly intimidated, I'm a 17 year old girl who looks younger than my age. I reallllyyy want this job, so anything will be helpful!

  • Answer:

Chin up- smile. This will be a very important part of your job, so you need to shine in the interview. Wear dress slacks & a nice blouse. No tattoos, gaudy earrings, no other piercings, no boobs. Bring a pen. Do not bring a friend, your mom or your baby. Go online & get as much info about the place as you can. Go to Urbanspoon.com & look at reviews. Have you ever eaten there? What's your favorite dish? What looks good on their online menu? Do you have any experience? It obviously doesn't matter- you nailed an interview. They're willing to train. Practice a "30 second personal commercial". They might say "Tell me about yourself". They DON'T want to know about family, friends & boyfriends. They want to know what YOU know that is pertinent to the job. You may say something like: I am still in high school, I graduate this summer (availability). I've baby-sat since I was 15 (servers can be unruly babies). I was a cheerleader for 3 years (team player). I don't eat out much, but I love to cook (basic knowledge of food). I also have my own car. One question may be "What would you do with an unhappy guest?" (it's the servers job to take care of this, but it may be thrown to you) Answer: Speak calmly & quietly, let the guest (always call them guests) speak without interrupting them. See if I can fix the problem (cook a steak more, order something else), and if I can't handle the situation, get a manager. But I would always tell a manager anyway, even if the problem was resolved. Also, keep in mind while you are seating people you are supposed to be fair to the servers (so they all have the same amount of people/tables) the RESTAURANT is your boss. Servers can be VERY catty about how they are sat & you have to be strong enough to rise above & ignore them. GOOD LUCK (-:

Act with confidence. You'll be probably hit with "What If Situations". Always smile. Acknowledge every guest by name. You will have the reservation sheet. If a guest does not like their table do not become flustered. You should always be 15 minutes ahead of everyone in managing tables. Never lie. If you do not know, say so and you would be happy to get an answer. If you have confidence and act with the guest's best interest, you will be appreciated. Good luck.
