Tipping a waiter/ress on a credit card slip instead of with cash?
-
Just wondering how this works... I usually tip my server by writing in the tip on my credit card receipt, as I never carry cash. In most restaurants, the server collects the signed receipt with the tip on it. I always assumed they record their tip when they collect the receipt.. But, in restaurants where you pay up at the front, how does the server receive their tip? Does the server get a list of all their tips at the end of the night? Do they know who tipped them what amount? Do they receive the actual cash that day for tips earned or do they have to wait until pay day weeks later to get their tips? Basically I'm wondering if my not tipping in cash makes the server have to wait longer to get their tip or not.

Answer:
no, it is collected, and they are paid out in cash later in the day.

Honestly, it depends on the resturant hun. I do know of some places when the wiatress/waiters end the shift and put in the code it tallies up the amounts of tips and they can have a manager sign the rec. and pay them at the end of the day. Others its on the paycheck. I do both, if I dont have cash. If I have cash I will rather use cash than card. Hope i helped you! Happy dining!

Actually, not tipping in cash means they have a harder time hiding the income from the IRS. So your 15 dollar tip is really 10 to them if it is on a credit card. So, do them a favor if you get good service, give them cash!!

As a server I can tell you at all the restaurants I have worked at I always got my tips at the end of the day. I do prefer cash though. In most places where you pay the server they record the tip in the computer system. At the end of the shift you get a sheet of paper called a checkout slip which has all sales recorded. They are separated by different types of credit cards, cash and checks. The slip tells you what cash you owe the restaurant if any. It depends if the server got paid in cash or mainly credit cards through out the day. If a sever mainly gets paid in credit cards all day the restaurant pays them out. It depends on the restaurant they are all use different systems.

In most cases yes the waiter does have to wait for the tip. They usually recieve it in there paycheck. I will always try to tip in cash because of this. I hope that this helps.....

i think they get a list but they may not even get the tip you should always tip with cash

some places give the money at the end of the shift when the waitperson checks out ( if they collect payment at the table) others depending on the system hold it and add it to the paycheck...I once worked at a place where we got credit card tips on a seperate paycheck once a month...They also deducted the 3% that the credit card companies charged them from the totals.

Let me see if I can explain this. At the end of your shift, you, the server, print a "sales receipt". It will show the total number of cash sales, including total dollar amount for cash sales. It also shows the total number, including dollar amount, for credit card sales (usually these are listed individually, showing each credit transaction's tip). Now...how do you get your credit card tip. The computer will deduct the total dollar amount of all credit card tips from the total dollar amount taken in for all cash sales. So...if you sold $100.00 in cash sales and had $20 in credit tips, you would only owe the restaurant $80 for your shift "cash out". The method is called "server banking". In other words, the restaurant doesn't use a cashier. This is how most restaurants work. I hope that makes sense...it kinda sounded like a math problem from 8th grade. However...I did work for one national chain that did hold your credit card tips and they put them on your bi-monthly paycheck. With this method, the only way you would know who tipped you what is if you asked the cashier after your customer paid and left. Side note...servers do prefer that you tip in cash. The person above is right...you do lose part of the tip to the government (regarding taxes) if you leave the tip on a credit card. But personally, I'm not going to complain with the method the customer uses to tip me as long as the tip is equal to the service I give them.

In general wait staff receives their credit card tips at the end of the night when the Visa, MasterCard, etc. are processed and totalled up.
