  • Answer:

Vehicle Anti-Theft Systems This may get you started. Does the vehicle have an anti-theft device built into the key (such as a black dot on each side). I had a 1991 Camaro with this type, called VATS. Your symptoms sound very familiar, it turned out to be a problem where the contacts inside the ignition were worn and not making connection with the key. In my case I followed the wire from the ignition to the base of the steering wheel. That black dot is nothing more than a resistor. I bought a resistor from Radio Shack that matched the resistance of my key and hooked it between the two wires and presto the car started every time. The other alternative was to replace the ignition at a hefty price. The other anti theft systems in the latter 90's were a radio frequency from the key to a receiver in the steering column. Key replacement and reprogram vehicle computer to match is only way to fix.
