What do restaurants do with recyclable bottles/cans?

I'm doing volunteer work abroad next month and we need to raise money and one of the ways I'm trying to do it is through recycling aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles. I figured some restaurants, especially those who serve a lot of beer in bottles, would have a lot of empty bottles/cans. Do they normally throw them away or do something with them. I'm wondering if we can get some restaurants to donate us their recyclables.

You would have to check with the individual places some recycle others don't. Plus they may or may not seperate the bottles and cans if they don't.

Several restaurants keep their bottles/cans and return them at the same time that they place a new order for beverages - they paid the deposit, they might as well get it back off their next bill. There is no deposit charge for a can of pop, or a bottle of beer, when you sit in a restaurant.
