Why is my aol.com out of order?

Why won't my server/waiter just shut up, listen to my order and give me what I ask for?

  • I talk to my friends who used to be servers. Their answers all are some version of this: "Hey, I am in a hurry, I don't have time to listen to every little thing you want. I get the main things right. It is your duty as a customer to patiently tell me two or three times what you want." None of them seem to grasp the idea that I came to relax, and I didn't come to be the waiter's Mommy and remind him over and over to get my order. I am not fussy. I tip well. I usually don't complain. I normally just don't come back. But today, as USUAL the server didn't bother to get it right. It was only me, and one other group in the IHOP, but "Mr.In a Big Hurry" the super important waiter didn't bother to SHUT UP and LISTEN when I said I wanted a side order of wheat toast. He said OK, and never brought it. My theory for why this happens is that people today resent waiting on others and feel it is beneath their dignity to listen. My brother was with me. He is a cop. His theory was two fold: People who are servers are two types: People waiting for another job, and just don't care ----and people who will be servers for life, and are low level peopel with no skills or ambition. But it really annoys me that servers lack the skill of shutting up. As a teacher I have discovered a truth. It is impossible to listen if you are flapping your mouth. And the servers never want to listen. They want to talk, talk, talk, and they don't really listen to what you are saying. They are just waiting so they can say the next thing in their routine. I want to say my order ONCE. I want to get what I ordered THE FIRST TIME. Why is this an impossible thing to demand? Why not just WRITE DOWN MY ORDER?

  • Answer:

I totally agree with you!! They talk too much. They don't listen. They bring me food I didn't order. They don't bring the food I did order. I am sick of it and won't take it any longer!!!

I've been eating in restaurants for over 30 years and I've never had that problem. You seem to have an attitude that wait-people are low class citizens, uneducated and beneath you. Maybe your restaurant problems lie with you...........

Speaking of someone that should shut up... Do you tell your servers this? Because that may be the reason they stop listening.

Im not judging you at all, but you act like you have never made a mistake in your life. The waiter was probably trying to make small talk and be polite to u. I mean the lady above is so right! U seem u look down to people "below" u. I mean your at ihop? do u want ur pancakes on a sliver platter and Vigo water as well? U need to calm down and realize that you are no better than the waiter. He is also human and he made a mistake, BIG EFFIN DEAL. Chill. Just realize your not the VIP of IHOP okay? ps. they probably spit in your food if u had major attitude.

Hey,, then why don't you just go to a different restaurant... There are some restaurants and hotels where there are less customers but those are really a little bit expensive... So if you wish, you may go to those restaurants or hotels....

Regardless... it is just a small mistake. No big deal. Servers always listen to their guests. I've been a server and I've been a customer. Yeah I have forgot to give someone a refill that asked for it. Other people ask me for things and it slipped my mind. We are all human! People do make mistakes. If it always keeps happening to you... that is where the issue might lay. Treat others as you wish to be treated. Like I said, I was a server throughout college and I cared. I wanted to make sure people were happy! Also just because someone is a server doesn't mean they don't have skills! Some servers depending what restaurant they work in can make more money there than what their degree is for! Next time you could politely ask your server, "If you don't mind, could you please write down my order? The last few times they didn't and I was missing a few things from my order. Thank you!"

I know when they do not write it down, they mess up, and it it true it is little things, it is like they are trying to impress you with their excellent memory, lol. Been there and they have a lot of people p.o. and most does not say anything.
