Wrong order in a restaurant, what should the restaurant do?
-
I am just wondering at the etiquette expected from a restaurant when they mess up your order: For example, I was having lunch with 2 friends. They delivered the wrong order for me, so I sent it back. By the time the right order came, my friends were practically finished their food, so they had to look at me eat for the next 15 minutes. What could be reasonable for the restaurant to do? Apologise? (didn´t), Not charge the dish? (didn´t), offer a complimentary drink? (didn´t). I know it is not the end of the world, but it was very inconvenient.

Answer:
An apology and either not charge for the dish OR an overall discount on the total bill, maybe 10 or 20%. This has happened to me a few times and that seems to be the common practice, but to not receive an apology or a discount is a pretty dumb move as far as customer service is concerned. I would speak to a manager next time and let them know, and if that doesn't work go over their head to the owner or district manager, depending on what type of establishment it is.

They should not charge you for the meal, definitely apologize, perhaps offer a disocount? Perhaps give a coupon for your next trip. Many years ago I was fortunate enough to have my own restaurant. It was my dream. I was so happy and I treated everyone as if they were my personal guest. THEY WERE...only thing is they chose the food and paid me for the honor of having them as my guest. The restaurant was a knockout success....I miss it to this day as well as the wonderful people who frequented "my place". Restaurants serve food but they are in the people business. The job is to make the entire experience as good as it can be. Unfortunately, there are fewer mom and pop operations and food is frozen and garbage. Suppliers are difficult to find. Mega companies buy up the bulk of food and upstarts have to learn the ropes. The personal touch does not happen in most chain places. Do not frequent that place any more...seek out reastaurants where the owner is on site. If there are problems, tell the owner about them. If they are sincere about serving the public, they will listen and appreciate the critique. I never became upset if someone told me of a problem. I was, however, very concerned when someone did not bother to give me a chance to make it right. New restaurants need two or maybe three visits to get everything perfect. Do not allow mega corporations to lower standards. Fancy decor, matching dishes, and a big parking lot will never replace pure pleasure of doing something you love and just plain good food.

An apology is certainly appropriate and I find it hard to believe that the server didn't say anything to you. Since you were served the correct meal (after the required prep time to get it out of the kitchen) you should not expect to get a free meal. It was inconvenient and they most certainly owed you an apology but that's as far as it should ever go.

Where was this? In any corporate restaurant I would think they would comp the dish from the bill or at least offer free dessert. In any case they should apologize. I noticed you spelled "apologise" with an "s" so you might not be in the U.S. and tipping practices might be different but just a heads up to anyone-if your food is wrong but it's not the servers fault (ie:steak is overcooked and needs to be sent back and they take it off the bill) tip on the ORIGINAL bill, Your server shouldn't suffer because they overcooked your steak, in fact they actually did more for you by taking it back and having it taken off the bill. But yeah, in your case that's ridiculous that they didn't at least apologize
