What are your favorite ethnic foods and what restaurants are the best places to get them?
-
My favorite ethnic foods are Chinese, Mexican and Italian, in that order of preference. I have no one favorite Chinese food place. I prefer a la carte to buffets, but will choose a buffet if that's the best that's available. Generally I like the little hole-in-the-wall Chinese places where the cooks and servers are obviously Asian, where chopsticks are available and where the choices include chicken, beef, pork and other meat dishes, as well as good steamed veggies. For Mexican, there are a lot of good choices. I like Tex-Mex as well as Northern New Mexico and Monterrey style foods. New Mexico has the hotter food and I love the sopapillas that are almost always part of the meal. Warning: taste the food before adding the hot sauce, and the green is hotter than the red. My favorite New Mexico style place is La Posta, in Las Cruces. For Tex-Mex I like a little weekend-only place near my home called La Cabana. Nice people and excellent food. (I live south of San Antonio, and La Cabana is on US 281 between Loop 1604 and the Atascosa County line.) Lots of good places to eat Italian, but my all-time favorite is a little family restaurant in Chicopee, Massachusetts. I don't remember the name of the place, but when I was there with a group of friends on a night they were closed, Mama opened the place up just to serve us. In San Antonio Caparelli's has good Italian food and the best pizza around. Okay. What's yours? Soul food? Korean? Vietnamese? German? Polish? Greek? French? Middle Eastern? Name your poisson and what's your favorite place to get it? Another in my series of questions on dining out. My Mastercard remains poised and ready for action.

Warren, You have hit on one of my favorite topics, food. I should be so overweight as I live to eat. As it is I can eat all I want and not get fat, just lucky I guess. I will have to drop Chinese from your list as it is not one of my favorites. I will replace it with Vietnamese. You like hot food that is where to go. I don't have a favorite restaurant as my daughter-in-law is Vietnamese and it is there house. We do have a little place here in town that serves some really great Pho, pronounced Fuh. It is soup. My first wife was full blooded Italian and my mother-in-law was one of the greatest cooks in the world. Growing up in the San Francisco bay area we have the best Italian restaurants, outside of Italy, in the world. Mexican. I live in a small city in the far suburbs of Silicon Valley. The town is more then 50% Hispanic. Needless to say we have some really good Mom and Pop restaurants. Authentic real Mexican food. As far as really hot food. I, a number of years ago, went to Bolivia to visit some friends we met here in the US. The sauces they used are probably the hottest I have run into. Like you we went to a place in Moro Bay, CA for a friends birthday. It was closed. We talked to the manager and he opened it for us, probably good for him as we spent a whole bunch of money. We sat there all afternoon buying drinks and eating every oyster he had in the place. If you like BBQ you have to get to the south. I mean places like South Carolina. The Geechie know how to do BBQ. It is not just grilling a steak. The sauce makes all the difference. All of us in the west think a BBQ is if it is cooked on a grill is BBQ. It is not. You have to find a place that is from the south. We have a few places in the area that know what BBQ is. Spent about 4 months in the Navy yard in Charleston SC. Sorry, I cannot remember the names of the places.
